Growing up I loved playing multiplayer with my family, but it is so strange to think how different it is today.  Some of my best memories is playing multiplayer games with my family when I was little.

Playing Street Fighter II against my older brother and losing badly every time.

Playing Super Smash Bros, GoldenEye, Perfect Dark, Turok: Rage Wars, and Mario Kart 64 with my friends from high school. Actually, I recall having a huge GoldenEye showdown with someone (now one of my best friends) from a theater production in high school. We spent most of rehearsal jawing back and forth about who was the better GoldenEye player and at one of the after parties we went head to head.

And God only knows how many hours I lost to Smash Bros. Melee and Double Dash!! in college and beyond.

Most recently, I invited some friends and co-workers over to my apartment to play Michael Jackson: The Experience on Wii, along with Wii Sports Resort and New Super Mario Bros. Wii.

Local multiplayer, incl. system link, is still better than online for me. Online only serves good purpose for rankings.
I am always looking for couch co-op games but sadly those aren't many (great ones). Also, achievements and trophies are mostly screwed in co-op games -.-

Local Multiplayer is almost all that I did when I played Video Games. The most notable Video Game that I played 2-player on was Mario Kart DD. My brother and I barely ever played separately on that game.

NFL Blitz, Goldeneye, Super Smash Bros, Donkey Kong Country, Mario Kart 64.

PC introduced me to multi-player games. My first ones were Star-craft & an Total Annihilation. (Real time strategy) followed by Counter-Strike, (FPS) & and finally MMO's like Linage I & II, Horizons, Ragnarok, but then I discovered something with MMOs. I was Paying to work. That's right, I said it. It was demanding work to keep the guild going, plus I had to schedule my time around the game. I gave it up when I discovered what it really was.

No more subscription for online play for me. I refuse to go there again. I got a PS3 & went without PSN+ until last September when I noticed the loads of free game rentals it would give me. I gives me months before the games expire, so I don't consider it work.

Streets of Rage, Golden Axe, Micromachines 2, Super Street Fighter 2, Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, Soul Calibur, that co-op mode in Street Fighter Alpha 3 back then.

And Cadillac & Dinosaurs, Snow Bros, Captain Commando, Shadow Over Mystara in the arcades.

Local multiplayer is, and will always be, better than online multiplayer.

Of course. Both local and online with SegaNet and before that, the Netlink for Saturn.

not really. maybe super mario kart,but that's about it.

Someone who calls himself a gamer and didn't experience Secret of Mana with at least 1 friend is a big lie to me.
I had big fun to play it with my family and some friends over the years who didn't know that master piece.
In General the SNES+PS1 time had a lot of those great local(coop) games...
Local MP and especially Coop were the best times gaming had on consoles in terms of Multiplayer.


Besides that i of course played a lot Multiplayer games on PC.
Arena Shooters(FPS that takes real skill ;)),MMORPGs,Diablo 2,Strategy stuff and all those nice things.
To be honest - My favorite Online game besides WoW was the Multiplayer in Rainbow Six Raven Shield.I hope they don't screw Patriots up cause the Vegas games already went completely into the console/casual direction :/

But yeah - Only a few exceptions come close to these games/times today.Games like Goof Troop that were somehow complete garbage could make insane fun if you played them with another person.If a game is garbage today it stays garbage.
Today its more about "When do i get the content i had years ago in every game when i bought it?"
