The fact that games like watch dogs and last of us are releasing on this gen hardware will mean people will be willing to hold off on a next gen purchase.

Releasing some of the same games on the ps3/ps4 and I assume the 360 and it's successor ain't gonna offer much motivation for some people to rush out and get a new console when they already own a machine that can play these games... Sure they will be graphically inferior to next gen versions but cash is tight for many. I doubt exclusives like infamous and killzone are large enough franchises to entice anyone outside the ps 'elite' die hards and how many of them are there? I'm a Sony owner through and through since the first ps and I don't see any reason to purchase a ps4 for at least a year or 2 based on what's been revealed so far..( though price will be a big decider for many so until that's revealed who knows?).in the real world reaction to the ps4 has been quite negative so far which isn't a good sign, so yeah, I have a feeling launches for ps4 and next Xbox ain't gonna be any better than the wii u...in a years time we may find ourselves in a very different world.

You may end up then getting normal people deciding they don't want to go along with it.  The PS3 being killed off means death to the current content on the shelves, because the PS4 won't play the games natively.  If the next XBox next the same, well then that will face similar issues.  What if the masses are content with ipad and tablet gaming as their normal outlet?

I dont think that is a Myth infact its one of the reason. Wii practically opened up casual market in 2006 with its ease of play and mobile phones  and tablets were no were in the picture. Lack of hardcore games for wii drove away the hardcore gamers like me to a PS3, just so that they can cater the casual gamers and their need, and when the Facebook/mobile/tablet dominance hit the full swing majority of the wii casual market went on to the multiple purpose device which offered more than wii itself and could be upgraded every year with different OS to choose from. For a Short time MS did bring back those casual audience to console once again with Kinect. but wasnt enough as mobile and tablet have been evolving at a rapid pace for any gaming console to keep up.

Now with Wii U Nintendo is targeting again at those casual market (who are happy with their SP/tablet)and also trying to cater the hardcore gamers, who by now already have a x360/ps3 a smartphone/tablet. so why would I (once a Nintendo buyer) would wanna buy a game console that i already have. Instead i would wait for PS4 which i assume be a significant upgrade over PS3. And also I dont see any exciting games releasing on Wii U untill PS4 is launched. In fact I have a PS3 which has exclusive coming up like gow, tlou, beyond and multiplats which will be available on Wii U too with almost identical graphics.

So in theory, Wii U isnt offering me anything that PS3/360 doesnt offer.

Offcorse it'll suffer same fate like their predecessors wich even doesn't meet the same numbers of Wii U on launch. And for now most of games at least in 2013 it'll be most of them "ports" or games available to current gen. Maybe it'll repeat like this gen, and only in their 3/4 yr they'll peak. Hmm, I wont say "the same". But they will have a similar weak start. The one thing that may hurt the new Box and the PS3 initially could be YLOD and RROD. At the moment I think that it would be better to wait for 2 years and get the console after the inevitable redesign and price cut. Being an early adopter turned out to be bad... you pay the higher price and have the risk that your console may break down.

It is the same with the Vita. I bought it last christmas because I got it for € 150 special offer. But I am sure that next year the first redesign will come... Thats the same thing with the DS/3DS. Having the feeling that you will get a better device if you wait for 6 months really hurts your propensity to buy the product now.

I don't worry OP, PS4 and nextbox will be fine. The average PS360 gamer is way more dedicated to gaming than the average Wii owner, so they're more likely to upgrade. Besides  a certain number of titles like Thief 4 and The Witcher 3 are not releasing on current gen consoles, so the fans of those games will jump very early. There will also be some solid exclusives like Killzone Shadowfall, VersusXIII (and I'm sure MS has some heavy-hitters too) that will justify the purchase of those systems.

I agree that they can and should integrate PS3 games into the PS4 PSN (so you can see friends are online, so the multiplayer games can even be played cross-platform, etc) but this takes a lot of work. Sony could take the easy option and just start over, especially with all of the new Facebook integration and Gaikai code that would be difficult to interface. The lack of PS3 BC seems to indicate to me that they won't be working on a smooth transition like that.

Hard to say. It will depend of the prices. See the struggle of Vita and WiiU. People are not willing to spend high cash for fresh consoles anymore. Today there are more options for videogames and the market will continue to have lower sales year-by-year
