AMD to sell a version of the PS4 APU to PC builders

In further AMD news it has been revealed that the company will be making available a version of the chip powering the Sony PlayStation 4 to ordinary folk and PC builders. The chip will be the same AMD Jaguar APU minus some Sony technology and custom specifications.

John Taylor, head of marketing for AMD's Global Business Units, told The Inquirer that the APU will be available to consumers later this year. The chip made available to consumers will be the based on the same technology but sounds like it will be cut down in several ways. Talking about Sony’s PS4 reveal AMD’s Taylor said “Everything that Sony has shared in that single chip is AMD [intellectual property], but we have not built an APU quite like that for anyone else in the market. It is by far the most powerful APU we have built to date, it leverages [intellectual property] that you will find in our A-series APUs later this year, our new generation of APUs but none that will quite be to that level of sheer number of cores, sheer number of teraflops.”

When AMD launches its third generation of APUs later in the year and the Sony PS4 is available it will be interesting to compare what differences and enhancements the Sony technology and chip specification makes to games titles across systems. However I’m sure both systems will offer nice in-game hair.

I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!

Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.

yea i saw this but not sure if it was here or not. i'm not looking for it. and as another thread said, PC gamers, still can't build a PS4.

By which they mean something with Jaguar cores and Radeon graphics. Oh wait that already exists.

That's already knows even before the PS4 rumors... the APU already exists... just the new version successor of A10-5800k was scheduled to be launched in late this year.

True, but this one will be 8-core CPU and a 7XXXM based GPU. Currently their plan was only 4-core CPUs in this same architecture. But since MSony have both made AMD to make an 8-core variant, AMD is likely trying to maximise the profit on that version by making a consumer version.

They already kinda confirmed that the APU in ps4 was one they were releasing already, but a very specialized version of it.

Will that APU's CPU be designed around using GDDR5 or will it be the standard DDR3 configuration? I'd guess the later.

Before the PS3 everyone was nice to me :(

Stardard DDR3.

Something you guys seem to miss here:

Bold 1 : AMD are also providing the processor for the next xbox, this statement suggests that microsoft will not be opting for a more powerful cpu to compete with the ps4

Bold 2 : More or less confirmation that features noted in AMD's processor roadmap slated for Q3/Q4 release will already be present in the PS4 processor.

There will be no PS4 Apu for PC for quite some time. There might be a severly cut back Version but even the Durango APU needs the highest speed DDR3+Esram to work. Withouta high bandwitmain memory a Gpu as big as the one in PS4 would be sitting around waiting for the Ram to give enough work to do. Thats actually the reason why we haven't seen better Apus yet. For a PS4 Apu to work PCs would need GDDR5 main memory or DDR3/4 stacking. Not going to happen right away.
