Sony will likely do what it has done for the last 2 generations and that's release their next gen console midway through the lifespan of the current gen console. So more then likely Sony will introduce their next console when they discontinue the ps2.

Again it must be said that your comparison is flawed. The first year of the PS2 had 12 months of Japan sales and 5 months of US sales. The PS3s first year had 12 months of both US and Japan sales and also had 8 months of European sales to boot. The PS3s first year far worse than the PS2s first year. By a lot.
Why do people keep projecting the PS2 onto the PS3? The PS2 was launched in very different circumstances. PS2 success does not necessarily equal PS3 success.

4 graphs to help reinforce my point. The only territory the PS3 is tracking close to the PS2 is in Europe. All the others have it signficantly behind the PS2 sales.
I agree, the 1st couple years for ps3 are gonna be its worst.
But the more I think about it, the only reason PS2 sold so well was its DVD player.
Although many ppl will buy PS3 for its Blu, the Blu wont push systems like the ever so user friendly huge jump from VCR tapes to DVD like the PS2 did.
And for the fact it seems the ps3 isnt a cheap peice of shit that will break.
People like me wont have to buy atleast 2 of them during the life cycle of the system.
PS2 was a cheap piece of equipment... sales were overly inflated due to consumers having to buy 2-3
