Actually in the past the first year of a consoles life has defined the generation. To make a turn around this huge would be a massive change from what has historically happened.

 Again, and again I have to say this, the PS3 under the circumstances had a great first year, better than the 360, better than previous consoles.

 Again it must be said that your comparison is flawed. The first year of the PS2 had 12 months of Japan sales and 5 months of US sales. The PS3s first year had 12 months of both US and Japan sales and also had 8 months of European sales to boot. The PS3s first year far worse than the PS2s first year. By a lot.
