Forums - Gaming - Famitsu Cross Review: Soul Sacrifice, Tales of Hearts R, and more

Some nice scores at the top. Far Cry 3 with 9's across the board is a bit of a surprise for me. Soul Sacrifice sounds awesome, I was dreading that it would turn out to be mediocre. Hopefully sales will pick up over time. I think the only thing that's really hurting it is that people already have their hunter games that they're invested in.

Btw are those PSP games visual novels or what o.O?

The last 3? Pretty much yeah. PSP is the king of visual novel ports. The eroge industry is in a big slump right now and there's a huge flood of companies doing cheap console and even smartphone ports to make ends meet.

Ohhhhhh Vita is finally alive.

PSV Soul Sacrifice - 10/9/9/9 AMAZING SCORE
PS3 Hatsune Miku Project Diva F - 9/9/9/8 GREAT SCORE
PSV Tales of Hearts R - 9/9/8/8 GREAT SCORE

Soul Sacrifice and Tales of Hears can finally give a boost for PSV in Japan.

Any hint to these games come to US/EU?

I didn't know that Japan even knew about Far Cry 3.

Soul Sacrifice - April 2013 in NA and May 2013 in EU.

As for the rest....never.

Still waiting for Tales of Innocence R....

You aren't missing too much. Easily one of the weakest Tales game ever, although even worse on DS. I don't even want to call it a mothership title.

As for Hearts R... it has more promise, it's supposedly been completely reworked from the DS version, but it will still be no Vesperia or Xillia 2.

Basically companies are facing rising costs due in part to the increased complexity expected out of game systems, as well as the shift in long time standard from small resolutions to HD resolutions requiring more time for the artwork. Also full voicing has become the industry standard so there is a need to hire voice actors and actresses to read large amounts of dialogue.

Combine this with the fact that sales are not improving and you have same income with higher costs = lower profits. The industry has never been a huge seller and visual novels are commonly considered a big success if they can sell even 10k copies. Low sales means they have to charge higher prices, which results in lower sales in a vicious cycle that really is unsolvable. Piracy is also a massive issue that plagues such small developers, as they can't afford proper DRM (which is easily cracked anyway because it's PC) or charge lawsuits on the uploaders. There are a few companies that I will not name that actively "leak" virus ridden copies of their software onto P2P networks in a desperate attempt to discourage pirates from targetting them.

I recently read an article that found the average salary for the visual novel employee is around 3 million yen, or $30,000 in simple conversion. This is very low, but companies really cannot afford to pay more because of such low profits. So there are developers, and expecially scenario writers and artists, are leaving the industry en masse. The writers often end up writing light novels, which are currently booming in Japan.

Actually sounds dreadfully similar to the state of the Video game industry in general.

But that's actually really interesting.

Well at least Soul Sacrifice but I want the Tales of too .

Sorry it appears my sources missed a game, updated front.

Also some info about Soul Sacrifice, it appears there will be more than 10 bosses added thru future free DLC.
There will also be paid DLC that adds chapters to the story, maybe this explains the 25 hour single player story.
