Forums - Sony - Welcome back Sony (4K, Xperia Z, Tablet Z, PS4)

Sony started the year with a bang! They first announced the 4K tvs, Xperia Z, Xperia Tablet Z and then PS4, all very exciting new products.

These products will put Sony back on the map. First of, there is huge demand for the Xperia Z smartphone:

"We have seen really good pre-orders", McDougall said in an interview at the Mobile World Congress. "We had the first stocks available in Germany in Berlin at the Sony store and sold those out in two hours.

"In France, we sold more in one day in our online store than we sold in 12 weeks in mobile devices."

The Xperia smartphone, which went on sale in Japan last month and is now available in 60 countries, sells for 649 euros and is part of the Japanese electronics group's push for a greater market presence in mobile devices.

Sony has identified mobile devices, which also include Xperia tablets, as part of its efforts to overcoming problems in its television unit that contributed to a record group loss in its last fiscal year.

"It (the Xperia smartphone) sold over 150,000 units in its first week in Japan, taking a 24 percent market share straight away." McDougall said. "It may be a bit too early to say but the first signs a very positive."

The Tablet Z will be available from April. It looks sexy and is water resistant just like the Z smartphone, its also the thinnest and lightest 10" tablet. Best looking Android tablet yet. Great hardware and elegant design.

The PS4 will be released this year, the system is very dev friendly so it will get tons of games and ports, it already has huge 1st and 3rd party support. If priced competitively it will be off to a great start, the PlayStation brand is still very strong. Likewise for the tvs, the 4K revolution should be a new start for Sony in the tv market.

This year will mean a turnaround for the company. Kaz Hirai is doing an amazing job.

I seriously can't see 4K TV's being a major hit for Sony with it's current price.

But But But... Their Finances!!!

"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY."  --Hermann Goering, leading Nazi party member, at the Nuremberg War Crime Trials

Conservatives:  Pushing for a small enough government to be a guest in your living room, or even better - your uterus.

Well this is kinda optimistic. Sony phones sell less then Windows phones, and those have only a 3-6% marketshare. Their tablet market share is even worse. Lets not get into the prohibitive price of their 4k TVs.

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

Good. Xperia Z looks absolutely amazing

4K tvs are going to go down in price over the next 5 to 10 years. It is no different than HDTV or Plasma was back in the day. Seriously, you people need some perspective. They aren't doing it overnight. The only consumers of 4K tvs at first will be rather wealthy individuals (mostly going for that 56" model since larger is unwieldy), sporting venues, and other large display places like outdoor squares and plazas. I give it 5 years before people can reasonably adopt them in the market.

Before the PS3 everyone was nice to me :(

4K TV's....not going to be mainstream anytime soon.

Xperia Z.... 3rd place at best after Apple & Samsung

Tablet Z.... see above

PS4 ??? time will tell.  Other than better graphics, we'll have to see if they can bring anything new to the game.

Sony deserve the success I really hope they do well this year and bring on the PS4!

Nice products, not so good sales unfortunately.
