Forums - Sony - VGLeaks: Orbis GPU – compute, queues and pipelines (GCN 2.0?)

A lot of rumors are flooding internet about GPU enhancements in PS4. We will try to give more info about this AMD’s custom graphic card inside PS4.

As we said Liverpool GPU is derived from R10XX family from AMD (Southern Islands). Front end blocks, back end blocks, and the basics of the shader cores remain largely unchanged. But they have added some major new additions (mostly aimed at improving the capabilities and efficiences of compute workloads).

Liverpool has multiple compute rings and pipes that provides fine control over how the system resources are divided amongst all of the application’s GPU workloads. This pipelines can perform simulteneous asynchronous compute.

This diagram exposes the queues and pipelines from PS4 GPU (you can click to enlarge the image).

You can compare the PS4 GPU rings (above) with R10XX retail (below)

PS4 GPU has a total of 2 rings and 64 queues on 10 pipelines

- Graphics (GFX) ring and pipeline

  • Same as R10xx
  • Graphics and compute
  • For game

- High Priority Graphics (HP3D) ring and pipeline

  • New for Liverpool
  • Same as GFX pipeline except no compute capabilities
  • For exclusive use by VShell

- 8 Compute-only pipelines

  • Each pipeline has 8 queues of a total of 64
  • Replaces the 2 compute-only queues and pipelines on R10XX
  • Can be used by both game and VShell (likely assign on a pipeline basis, 1 for VShell, and 7 for game)
  • Queues can be allocated by game system or by middleware type
  • Allows rendering and compute loads to be processed in parallel
  • Liverpool compute-only pipelines do not have Constant Update Engines (presented in R10XX cards)

Thanks @JoeTheBro for share the link.

So what do you guys think about the little magical ponies found in PS4's GPU?

What I got for now...

- Seems like a preview of GCN2 (HD 8000).
- A 8x8 approuch instead the 2x2 (GCN) is a lot better for efficiency/utilization of GPU.
- The 8 ACE can be addresed by CPU.

This thing is really shaping up to be a great machine. GPU heavy, easy to develop for, optimized, and equipped with the RAM to utilize it all. Even the PS4's CPU isn't going to be bogged down with that secondary CPU doing a lot of the background functions.

Before the PS3 everyone was nice to me :(

Some gafs questions...

Given I am so totally lost, I am going ask a few questions.

Firstly an open ended one:

What does it all mean for PS4 GPU when compared to traditional HD7850?

Closed question:

Does this mean that with little effort the developers can get to its theoretical 1.84TF?

Is the GPU customization better or worse than previously assumed?

All this means is, they are giving developer's more options on the GPU at one time. If they want to make an area that is heavy on CPU work, they can do that and run code parallel without the GPU and CPU running into each other. It's "smart" design essentially.

Reading the gaf comments I found picture "Kaz GDDR5"

It's Epic.

So is 8xxx sea islands even available yet? That got delayed to 2014 didn't it? So this means AMD struck a customized enhanced 7xxx southern island deal with Sony so they could get the performance of the new series early. A route like this probably saved Sony money as well as from a console delay.

Also, what is Durango's current rumored GPU? What adjustments could MS make that wouldn't delay their launch?

Delayed to Q4 2013... same period than PS4 release.

So impossible for production demand? That would delay it to early 2014.

AMD 1.3 TFLOPS with (or near of) 100% efficiency... the 360's GPU had 60% efficiency for comparison.

Now PS4 seems to have a AMD 1.84 TFLOPS close to 100 efficiency too.

Little adjustments... more like clock and men size. But MS can have done the adjustments months ago and nobody have the leaks yet.
