2006 - We are in the lead! that's the only thing that matters, Xbox has killed PS3
2007 - We have Halo, PS3 has Haze and no games
2008 - Gears of war has the best graphics. MGS4 will release on 360 too and PS3 has no games
2009 - Uncharted 2 is released. graphics doesn't mean shit. Xbox is the leading console.
2010 - PS3 has some games but nothing excite me. Multiplat games look better on 360.
2011 - PS3 will never catch 360 sales.
2012 - Dont care abt world wide 360 is constantly outselling PS3 in US, that is the main market.
2013 - OMG it took 7 years to catch upto 360, damn that's a long time, just shows how strong is Xbox.

2014 - Leading doesnt mean anything its the software tie ratio that matters

Nope. Wii U is selling horribly. The chances of PS4 selling worse are very slim. For the sake of this industry, we should all hope PS4 sells well.

The gap is actually more like 1M. Numbers haven't been corrected for 2012, yet. I'm guessing they are waiting for Q1 2014 shipments to make sure no one overshipped. Still, quite impressive considering Sony basically handed MS the ball at the start of the gen for 2 years or so, with a $200 price difference, weaker online structure, and lack of quality 3rd party support. Even with all that, MS couldn't hold onto that ball for the remainder of the gen. Just shows you Sony's wise decisions of late have paid off, as well as the strength of the PS brand. I do have to give MS kudos for keeping the lead for so long, though.

Also, it's hilarious to watch 360 guys try and downplay this. Back in 2008 and early 2009, when the gap was ~8M, most were bragging about how the gap would either stay the same or just continue to grow larger. Now that the PS3 is almost guaranteed to pass the 360 this year, and will probably end the gen with a 8M+ lead, IT DOESN'T MATTER. Of course, I'm sure if MS had kept the lead, it would have meant everything in the world.

The PS3 would've overtaken it much sooner, but the 360S and Kinect rejuvenated the xbox sales. Kinect alone is responsible for extra 10-15m Xbox sales.

OMG, people still care about this? The golden days of vgchartz revisited. Seriously though, M$ wins Sony this gen hands down because IMO, U.S. is the most important region as it buys the most software which is what these manufacturers ultimately care about. "Rest of world" probably just pirates games for the most part. Sony got obliterated in the U.S where it counts most thats why their software sales is far behind. Better luck with the ps4. I'll assist with a day 1 buy thanks to KZ:SR.

Ps3 passing now doesn't really mean anything like Munkeh said. Gen pretty much ended when the Wii U launched. I alone have bought 4 ps3s so numbers for both sides don't paint a real picture anyway.

no it doesn't. we can't say for sure what % of PS3's sold were for the purpose of being BluRay movie players.

I think that looking at the attach rate says a lot.
