Pretty much Sony has future proofed the console for a good while. Good stuff.

This to be honest was a shock for me as all reports were looking at 4Gb RAM. With regards to MS, we all assume they already have 8GB DDR3 RAM setup for the 720. But isn't it rumoured that 2-3Gb of that is earmarked for the OS, which is rumoured to be a version of Windows 8. Also if MS was to try and up the specs of their RAM amount, surely they are limited to what they can fit on the board...assuming there are only 2 slots for RAM....so it would surely need to be 8GB or 16GB?
Prediction (June 12th 2017)
Permanent pricedrop for both PS4 Slim and PS4 Pro in October.
PS4 Slim $249 (October 2017)
PS4 Pro $349 (October 2017)
Hellloooooo Power house! I was really only banking on getting 4gig, but hey! :) WIN WIN!

Slots? What? There won't be "slots" for RAM, the chips be directly onboard...

Yeah I suppose, but still the same applies, there needs to be a setup on the chip for the memory so you can't all of a sudden use 3 chips instead of 2.

right but as you can see Sony could double the RAM, too.

Slots? That's not a PC motherboads... the RAM is fixed into the board... no slot... Sony seens to use 16 chips of 512MB memory (the biggest chip for GDDR5 in the market) to reach 8GB GDDR5.
Just to explain the actual chip of RAM found in PC have a lot of chips into... it's a group of chip.
For exemplo the image below have 8 chips of DDR3 RAM.

Now the Wii U board... 4 chips of 512MB DDR3 on the board (2GB total).

Sony will use 16 chips of 512MB GDDR5 (8GB total) because that's the biggest GDDR5 chip but Microsoft can use 8 chips of 1GB DDR3 to reach the same 8GB because DDR3 have chips bigger than 512MB for example.
Anyway GDDR5 and DDR3 are completaly diferent kinds of memory... and GDDR5 is difference from DDR5 too.

That game looks SO sick! My dream of playing CGI graphics on consoles seems to have finally come to be. ^_^
OT: The announcement of 8 Gigs of GDRR5 really surprised me; I was honestly expecting about 4-6 Gigs of DDR3 ram. Needless to say I am quite happy.

Assume the rumors of the final retail units for the next xbox are true and it uses 8GB DDR3, to 1-up Sony they switch it to 12GB, or 16GB, it's still a problem, because: - DDR3 < GDDR5 in speed, by a huge margin - Enjoy your $500+ console for 12gb, $550-$599 for 16gb - Increase in memory from 8GB to anything higher won't actually make much of a difference at all for 1080p because the amount of resources you can cram in to a single scene is limited, hence why modern day graphics cards use a hell of a lot more ram the higher you bump your resolution, but the general normal is that about 2gb is enough for 1080p - on top of that though you have the issue of the bandwidth limiting the next xbox's performance. I'll give you an idea of what Microsoft are probably thinking right now: "Damn, our industry spies were right, it has a crazy amount of ram, we can't afford to bump up ours without taking a significant loss on each console, lets just stick with the plan and hope our broader approach to putting a game playing windows 8 media center in every home has wings for both our gaming sector and our OS sector. The one thing you can take away from this is basically that there is virtually no possibility in hell now, if leaked durango specs are to be believed (given the closeness of the ps4 specs we can assume the durango ones are more or less accurate too), that the durango will be able to outperform the orbis in any area. |
couldn't have said it better

they didnt, but i dont think it would be over 2 GBs. that would leave 6GB for games, not only is that 6 times more than what the WiiU has, but its also much faster.
