Forums - Sony - Rumor: Sony will be introducing a new paid online service with the PS4

The article said "most". I'm betting that Sony will follow the same format of PS+, except they'll expand it more (through features like cross game chat requiring a membership for example) while keeping online play free. They have an advantage over MS in the sense that they provide a basic online service for free while additional benefits require payment. Sony is likely looking for more ways to make PS+ attractive, which makes sense going into next gen.

every free online feature on ps3 will remain free on PS4. new features will go into ps+ or whatever its going to be called. nothings changed.

Could anyone really blame Sony? This gen proved that charging a sub to play online is perfectly fine apparently.

Honestly to me it sounds like an improved PS+ with online play still being a free thing. Though, people here are acting like Sony would be the worst company ever to make it a requirement lol. If it is a req, it would suck sure, but It's something that would have come about due to the many people who supported being charged a sub fee in the first place.

PS+ is already an extremely awesome service, if it was required to play online it would be up to Sony to show that it's online service isn't inferior to Lives. Right now I think the common belief is that Live offers a superior service, It will be up to Sony to not only provide a service that is better if not on par, but also convince people that the price would be worth it.

Asking people to buy for online gaming nowadays is like losing many potential buyers. Not many people are willing to pay for such a basic feature.
If the rumor is true, we'll see the rise of PC gamers for sure..

Hope it false, for the sake of Sony.

For the financial health of SCE, I actually hope this is true.

Honestly I don't care about the meltdowns. They'll come from people that are all emotional instead of logical. If you truly love Sony as you claim, you'll see that this is a good thing. If anything, just complain that they better make it worth it ...

IDK aren't here like 40 million gold subscribers on XBL.

I like how everyone assumes PS+ would be included with the standard "gold" fee.
If they can do $30 a year thats still half the cost of XBL so they could still be at a advantage.

Funny if true meaning only the Wii U would be free to play online. Could be a great selling point for Nintendo.

Also... the meltdown.

It's just that simple.

That's right. But I expect people to drop off of it in the coming months. People that are on Xbox Live do not feel it's worth it (most of them, well people I know at least) , so Sony would have to show alot to convince people to pay a similar fee. With Wii U going the F2P path with no multiplayer latency (as far as my experience go), I just don't see another gen with prenium fees for online multiplayer. PS+ is fine since it gives great offers on games and more, but please don't make people pay to play! The only case I can see a game asks for subs is Destiny, but I believe it will be an MMO, so there will be updates all the time.

But paying 60$/year to play COD with your friends (reason why theres 40M gold subs, along with Halo), that is just ridiculous.

I don't say it won't happen, but I just find it a bit suicidal if they incorporate it.

And if they don't, I can see alot of MS gamers switching to PS4: if 720 asks for subscription fees...

Online will certainly stay free what they are going to do is tie in stuff like Gaiki + Plus & whatever other premium feature they are offering.

I disagree (respectively ofcourse).

Most of the people I have met really don't care about the subscription fee at all. They don't mind paying for Live. They put up with it this entire gen I don't see why they would stop all of a sudden. Not to mention in the US it's seen as the "cool" console. The public loves the Xbox brand and truly believes it's the best, whether that's true or not is irrelevant.

Add to the fact that now Acheivment/Trophies are available and people seem less likely to switch now compared to last gens.
