Report: The Next PlayStation Will Stream PS3 Games

Ever since Sony purchased streaming games company Gakai last year, it's been speculated that they were planning to have the next PlayStation stream games. Today, the Wall Street Journalreports that is indeed the case, and that the new console will stream PlayStation 3 games.

Citing "people familiar with the company's plans," the WSJ elaborates:

The new technology, to be unveiled Wednesday along with the new console, will allow users to play games delivered over the Internet, these people said. The streaming service, they added, is designed to use current PlayStation 3 titles on the new console; the new device is also expected to play new games stored on optical discs

We've reached out to Sony for comment, and while they haven't been particularly forthcoming regarding most PlayStation rumors and reports over the past few weeks, we'll update when we hear back. Meanwhile, here's everything we know about the new console so far.

What do you guys think? I'm not sure how this would work with people that have retail Ps3 games. Interesting news anyway though. Here's to hoping both the Ps4 and Nextbox have backward compatibility.

Currently own:

  • Ps4

Currently playing: Witcher 3, Walking Dead S1/2, GTA5, Dying Light, Tomb Raider Remaster, MGS Ground Zeros

Does any negatives to streaming exist?

Question is, if I put a PS3 game on BluRay in the tray, will it let me stream it for free? Even if that's the case though, I'm not looking forward to all that lag, much rather would have actual BC.

if you have a slow internet connection then i guess so yes. if not i guess only some input lag might be an issue, but from what i heard its barely if not even noticable

it would be really cool if they made a system where if you inserted your PS3 disk the console and network would recognize that you own the game, and allow you to stream it. that away you can play every game ps3 game you already have on your ps4 without paying any extra money

It would be great if PS4 lets me install my PS3 game to the hard drive and then a virtual emulator plalys the game through Gaikai or something. This way it wouldn't really use that much bandwidth as you wouldn't be streaming full games from the cloud.

The network could associate games with your account if you have trophy data registered.

Although what about rentals and borrowing games? How does that work?

If I can play the games I have for free and buy others then that a amazing feature... on pair or even better than BC.

it's a video stream - the gaikai servers calculate the game and encode a video they send to your device, which decodes the video and sends your control inputs to the gaikai servers

i guess it would be exactly the same as having backwords compatiblity but instead of the ps4 playing the game, the network would just stream it instead. it would keep the ps3 software market alive for a longer while in my opinion
