Forums - Gaming - Gamestop: 60% of customers won´t buy a console that blocks used games

Eh theres no point going into it.  Most peopke on this forum have strong opinions they are completly uneducated on.

Gamestop is the number one retailer for new PS3 sales

The number one retailer for new Vita sales

Last year we became the number one retailer for new 3DS sales.

We advertise the HECK out of new games and hugely grow their userbase.

And yet "gamers" cry out for Gamestop to die because "they sell used games and thats bad for the industry" even though that isnt even true

These gamers are wishing for the industry to die because thats what it will take to kill Gamestop.  The entire collapse of the industry

So, this is just a biased poll, like Axum said? It sure seems to be based off of what you've told us...

I can totally believe your statement, though. Pretty much everyone I know Pre-Orders their games at GameStop and buys their new games at GameStop. No one does this at WalMart or BestBuy that I know of...

But, why did you edit my post? You made would into wouindd.

It's hard to believe any statistics for used games that come out of Gamestop's mouths... but, they seemed quite worried about this.

If you poll things certain ways, you can get the stats you want.  Sure, you can find 60% of GAMESTOP customers won't buy a console that blocks used games.

I don't know if I would buy a console that blocked used games.

I want to move more to digital content... so long as that content is discounted. I won't pay day one full price. Basically if its the same initial advantage to buying used... i.e. cheaper.

Of course I lose the ability to resell, but more and more my kids bitch and complain if I go to resell a game. So I'm more likely now to just keep the games.

All in all, I want a discount price for games. I'm patient and very few games are day one for me.

Blocking used games won't hurt console sales, if the console has the games people want, but it will hurt new game sales for just-less-than-top-tier titles. People won't be able to justify $60 on those any more because they can't get any back on trade.

I disagree with your first point, but you are 100% right about you're last point.  This means we are going to be getting fewer risky titles, and more CODs.  The reason I disagree with your first point is that if you have two consoles that allow used games, which also allows playing games at a friends house and rentals, and one that doesn't, which do you think isn't going to sell.  Sure, diehard MS fans won't care (and will even defend MS's decision), and will buy it no matter what.  But, once the average gamer finds out that the NeXbox can't play used games and rentals, especially those who make a habit of using cash from selling games to by more games and/or rent games before a full purchase, then they are going to stay clear of that system.  We'll have to wait and see what MS chooses to do.

So games will get priced on quality?  What an absurd notion, imagine if everything did that.

It will end the free-for-all of every random game getting a triple-A budget and 100-strong team for 3 years.

Or if they don't see it coming, then just more studio closures.

I think the middle of gaming will go away and we'll be left with CoD, Halo, AC and then at the other end the Arcade or mobile titles.

I also would never buy a console that blocks used games.this also means that we cant bring a game to a friends house because it will be considered used

Lol forget about playing it at your mates, what about playing it on another console you own because your first one failed?

They could link it to your PSN or LIVE account sure, but what if those services ever go down in the future?

True, if the consoles decide to make that the big difference and there's no difference in game library or price, that certainly can be a deciding feature. I do wonder if tying oneself to your Live or PSN account won't overcome that though. The loyalty last gen went where the games were at, but this gen we have online accounts.

MS would be idiotic to insist on it if Sony isn't doing it.

Never bought anything from GameStop and I havent bought any used games since 2002 so cant say this will affect me much (the notion of used games being blocked I mean).

has there ever been a game you wanted that was out of print then in over the past 10 years?

Yes twin snakes on gamecube it basically had jsut enough copies to fill preorders (well at least in AUS)

Only used game I ever bought was MGS4 a few months ago. I've also only sold a couple games and HATED it!

Blocking used games is fine for me. Blocking "playing at a friends house" however isn't. Also I'm sure gamestop is saying this to help with their stocks even if the rumor is false.

I'm just going to put this out there, if MS and Sony are really going to try to do away with the used game market, then Nintendo will win the generation again because I don't see them discounting games the way Steam would do it since they are stock companies whereas Steam is a private company. If there is one thing I've realized in the 7th gen of consoles, it's that what publishers think people want or try to tell people what they want are often not what people really want, at least that's how the Wii won.
