Forums - General - The tinnitus (ear ringing) thread

Does anyone else here suffer from tinnitus (chronic ringing in the ear)? I have it for about 9 months now. It's really annoying at first, but I'm quite used to it now.

Nope, but I know a co worker that has it. He was former military who maintenance artillery and tanks so that might have something to do with it. Supposedly, it takes time before one notices hearing damage that could have occurred years earlier in life (he is around 65 now and only recently noticed ringing in ear).  Says it drives him crazy at nights when I guess he notices it the most.  He has to get up from bed and do something to distract himself from the sound since he can't sleep too well while it rings.

I believe my dad has a low hum in his ears (he was artillery in Vietnam).

They won't be the only ex-soldiers with tinnitus. nowadays, tinnitus is the no. 1 disability among military veterans.

Yup. I've been having it for about one year now. I was pretty surprised once it started happening since I always was very careful not to blast too loud music into my ears.

I would say it's totally worth it though; music > no music

I always blast music and haven't had problems with my ears.... Is it genetic?

Jep, heb het sinds toen ik klein was

trans: got it when I was a lil boi

I've had it since 1999, but i have gotten used to, although 2 weeks ago it actually severly intensified so much that i considered jumping out the the window on the 4th floor. Luckily it calmed down again after a few days.

Hi, there is help out there as I have tinnitus and also work for the American Tinnitus Association.

Check out ATA.org for information and resources. Pages worth checking out include ATA.org/sound (free customizable sound mixer), ATA.org/resources, ATA.org/tt-archive (35+ years of Tinnitus Today magazine), ATA.org/music, ATA.org/podcasts and ATA.org/videos.

If anyone has questions, are looking for an audiologist near home or have any general questions, email me at daniel@ata.org.

Thanks!

It's not genetic, but some people can have severe hearing damage and no tinnitus at all.

I neveredblasted music at home or in my car, the only reason I got it was clubbing.

::chuckle:: I thought tinnitus was a normal, everyone has to deal with it, sorta thing for most of my life. I didn't even know there was a name for it. I've had it since birth as far as i know. But, living with it, I am so used to it that it doesn't bother me at all.
