From the point of view of PS2, they may stop making them to make factory time/space for the PS4. Having Ps2, Ps3 and Ps4 (and Vita) all being made is a logistical headache, and with Ps2 dropping like it was, I suspect they feel the PS3 will take over - especially if they give it a price cut.
In terms of Sony announcing they have shipped/sold more than MS, its very unlikely. Sony have become a lot more secretive in terms of sales data over the last few years. Even when they have done well, they don't generally rub it in the faces of the competition.
