Glad to see another person joining PSN.
1.) You can update your vita via ps3 OR pc OR just by normal wi-fi if memory serves me well. If you have an issue with updating one way then try another.
2) Depends on whether the games are online or retail. If you bought the games online, then they should be on your download list (you can check this) and will be tied to your PSN account. Basically this means if your ps3 breaks down and you buy a new one, just access your PSN account via the new console and you can re-download all your games. If you want to save games and save data, use a portable hdd to do a backup.
3.) For games that are compatible with both, for some games you can buy and download the same version onto both the PS3 and vita. I have tried this for various ps1/minis games and it seems to work fine (for these I have also been able to move and play save data saved on the other device). This also works for some psn ps3/vita games where you can download the same version onto both, but most of the retail games and some of the psn games you cant download and play the same version. Im not sure about Oddworld - guess you will just have to check and see.
