PS4 is set to be revealed on February 20th. Read more here. The question on everyone's minds is how can Sony beat Microsoft? It's no secret that Sony has LOST marketshare with the release of the PS3 while Microsoft made massive gains. As it currently stands, Sony is "winning" Europe, Microsoft is winning America and Nintendo is winning Japan. How can Sony change this? How can Sony not only take back their home country of Japan but gain back the American region all while continuing to be the leader in Europe? If that sounds impossible to you, that's because it is. The odds of this happening next-gen aren't very good. Sony needs to make all the right moves and Microsoft needs to make some mistakes.
A CVG insider insists that although PS4 will be slightly more powerful than the Next Xbox, Sony isn't going to rely on that to sell consoles. This insiders exact words are "Sony is focusing attentions on fighting the Xbox business head-on with a well organised and timely console launch. No long waits, no executive hubris, no historic calamities." Sounds good, but just this morning we got word that launch plans put the PS4 as launching in Europe some time in 2014 while it would arrive in the US/Japan in time for the holidays this year in 2013.
Why would Sony do this? Do they not know Europe is their strongest region? Why leave that for last? Well the answer could be in that quote. Sony is carefully planning the PS4 launch and they plan on launching it successfully. Unfortunately, this means the complicated structure of the European market has to be left for last but this could end up being a good thing. It lets Sony focus on taking back America from Microsoft. Hopefully this means Sony's planned PS4 launch is met with enough supply to meet demand and appropriate pricing. Another "calamity" such as a $599 price point would kill off the PS4, while a well organised and region-by-region controlled launch could lead to an early lead in the next generation.
Sony already made the first move with yesterdays PS4 teaser. They are already 1 step ahead of Microsoft. If they continue on this path and everything goes right, we could see Playstation returning to its glory days.
