Forums - Gaming - PS4 announcement this month is bad news for both WiiU and Nextbox

I'm not sure why people are comparing this to a 3DS/Vita situation, or if they're being serious about that. The PSP was never a blip on the radar in the west and neither was the Vita, while the 3DS was following the DS. Sony's draw in the handheld market over here isn't even a fraction of what it can generate in the home console market.

On topic, I don't see this hurting Microsoft. They are masters at hype. Remember when Project Natal was going to change the face of gaming? Remember Milo and that video where we never had to leave the house because Kinect did everything for us? And, because it's Microsoft, the media interest is going to be through the roof.

No, regardless of which console is announced first, it won't make much difference ultimately.

With the Wii U, however, I'm not so sure. People on the fence about buying one, those that don't follow the gaming industry closely, might decide to wait if the PS4 is announced this early. It could hurt some of the business Nintendo was hoping to do before the rest of the next gen caught up. Remember that the average consumer doesn't think of systems in terms of "generations", just by what is out or announced when they're thinking about buying.

Not that I think the effect will be extreme. Those who want to play Nintendo games will buy a Wii U.

Why you ask? The announcement will steal both Wiius and Nextbox' thunder away. Its 1st of february and the whole gaming community is talking about the PS4. After PS Meeting showing off the console and gameplay videos of PS4 games, people will go crazy! The PS4 will be the big talk, it will have massive hype leading up to E3. Whatever Nintendo was gonna announce at that show, it won't attract as much attention as the next gen. Microsoft better announce the Nextbox on their own event before the E3, I know they had a countdown but announcing it at that show is too late, it will have to compete with both further PS4 unveilings and new WiiU games, not getting as much coverage as it would on its own standalone event.

Yeah I can totally see PS4 being bad news for the Wii U like the Vita was to the 3DS! :P

hahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

What's with this lack of sense and insight, prevalent these days?

The PS2 led its gen. That didn't make the PS3 lead during its gen. The Wii led its gen, but like the PS2, this doesn't guaranty that the Wii U will lead its gen. At all.

I mean, seriously... -__-

What Wii U thunder?

I think it puts more pressure on Microsoft.

The Nintendo direct showed us X. The most visually impressive game to date. Sony didnt like that one bit, Nintendo was ushering in the new gen and they want to do that.
They 1-up Nintendo and unveil the PS4, the question is if the new games will outgun X. If they do, then more pressure and more difficult it will be for Microsoft to wow us. They will need in turn to trump Sony's offering.
I would say they are in the most unconfortable position right now.

The American media will lap up any new Xbox announcement considering the 360's dominance there at the moment, and we all know how US media hype eventually infiltrates the rest of the world, overshadowing everything else.

Still, it's good to see Sony not resting on their laurels but taking charge...if indeed Feb 20th is when they announce PS4. A few extra weeks/months of buzz definitely won't hurt.

Haha. funny. That worked well in japan in Europe this gen but then again Americans don't consider them to be in "the world".

OT:

Personally I don't see how an announcement can be bad news for anyone, at least in this case. The consumer don't care about bland annoucements, they want hard facts and figures to go with the annoncement and as we don't have any yet getting excited and saying it is bad news is premature.

What if they announced a $700.00 low spec console? Would that still be bad news for MS and Nintendo?

What's with the lack of sense and insight.

3DS was weaker than Vita, that didn't mean Vita  destroyed it once it launched.

Wii U is weaker than PS4, that doesn't mean PS4 is going to destroy it when it launches.

No one in this thread has been going on about Wii U leading next gen. They're mocking people who think WiiU stands no chance against the likes of PS4 because it will have better hardware.

Ok... That was basically the point I made with my comments Did you miss anything?

The only one who should really be worried is Nintendo. It the other 2 consoles launch this holiday season and are reasonably priced, they better be ready with a price drop and some killer apps this year.

Wii U's thunder? What thunder? lol

OT. Hypppppppppppppped 120%.

Difference being that the Wii U isn't really burning the shelves right now...

Also, as the PS2 has eloquently illustrated, just because you were sales king during a gen doesn't guaranty that you'll remain kind the gen after.

Wii U may end up selling like the Cube in comparison to its competitors.

Not saying it will, but at this point in time, and considering the shaky state of the industry right now, everything is in the air.

You didn't follow much on 3DS I take it :P you'd get the joke much better if you did.
