Forums - Gaming - Difference between 60hz and 120hz?

I was going to upgrade my screen for college (currently gaming on a 19", 720p, 60hz philips).  I noticed that there are a lot of 1080p 60hz tvs and saw a few with Sony's "motion flow" tech which I was wondering if any of you had switched to 120hz and noticed a difference?

Also is there any reason anyone would ever need a 240hz tv because I've seen those for not too much more (like $750 as opposed to $500 for the 120hz ones).  I'm looking to future proof for a little but only want a 40-46" screen size (limited room in my college apartment) so would any of this be necessary for blu-ray, 3D, or next gen gaming?

lol 120hz >>> 60hz

120hz is a lot more smoother especially if you are trying to get a good experience going for 1080p

i also heard that you can't really see the 1080p difference with a TV anything below 40in

I see how about this "Motionflow XR 240 blur reduction" that I see on all the Sony ones?  I can't seem to find if that means 60hz, 120hz, or what

That really depends on how close you're sitting to a screen.  On a computer monitor for example you'd likely notice because you're sitting so close, but if you sit a reasonable distance away, you probably can't tell.

Somenone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that since most games run at 60FPS 120 HZ wouldn't be necessary unless maybe you're doing 3D.  If your game is only delivering 60 frames in a second, it doesn't matter how many your TV can display.

"MotionFlow" and other such motion interpolation tech just adds intermediary frames according to a formulae and can introduce input latency. It's widely hated by most people and often introduces artifacting, motion judder and the so called "soap opera" effect. The TVs themselves likely don't even accept 120Hz input.

120Hz monitors are good, especially if you are doing 3D. But you will need a powerful PC to run modern games at that framerate.

hz= gigahertz

fps = frames per second

120 gigahertz is the refresh rate

so a 30 fps game will look smoother on a 120hz 1080p TV than it will look on 60hz 1080p TV

OH DAMN!!! i thought you were talking about a TV when you said "screen" lol

i guess i don't know how much of a difference it would be on a pc

my bad

Actually, Hz = hertz

KHz = KiloHertz = 1000 Hertz

MHz = Megahertz = 1000  Khz = 1 000 000 Hertz

GHz = Gigahertz = 1000 MHz = 1 000 000 000 Hertz.

A 120 Hz Tv isn't 120 gigahertz. -_-

I was in the process of editing my own post, anyway. I too typed it too fast.
