Similar story, my mom released a bird back into the wild after it got into her apartment, and 10 sec later a random house-cat suddenly comes out of nowhere and kills it. I didn't really understand if that was funny or sad.

I guess they are as sure as they can be. They saw it happen so they are the best to know what happened. The camera did show the hawk swoop in and fly away. Hawks usualy win in those situations.
