Forums - PC - Installing Linux on Mac via USB

Wondering if anybody's done this before. So you know, it's a 2012 MBA with Mountain Lion... which means Boot Camp has pretty much been locked in to supporting Windows 7 only (from what Google tells me).

I've installed rEFIt, so that the Mac can boot into Linux distros.

I'm going to Ubuntu, I downloaded the latest iso, 64bit, and used hdiutil to convert it to a dmg file. I then use dd to copy the dmg over to a USB HDD.

When I boot up and load rEFIt, however, the ubuntu option isn't loading.

What am I doing wrong?

Did you shut down the mac instead of rebooting it? you need to shut it down

I did the full shutdown. rEFIt doesn't load at all on restart, rEFIt is loading, just not displaying the Ubuntu option.

I don't actual think you should have converted the ISO to DMG

Well, I still have the iso. Thing is, just about every result on Google is telling me to do the conversion.
