 Of course, the number of failures of the xbox 360 is a good reason to not buy one.  But it is very rare that i see people who want to buy a PS3 because of that.  They just want to buy a PS3 because the brand is so important in Europe that lots of people wouldn't even considere buying a Xbox 360.

And also, the 33% failure from what i have seen since last summer is now a thing of the past, the new models sold in the end of the year didnt have this problem anymore.  Of course, maybe we will see in 6 months or more that finally they have problems too but for the moment it doesnt seem so.

he is stating that consumers have a strong preference toward backward compatible ps3s, but they don't know that certain models aren't bc...so when he tells them that, they decide not to buy that model, instead getting the other model or waiting for price to go down on other model or whatever

but his point was that consumers want bc but don't usually know that the 40gb isn't bc...so they are uninformed and many likely buy 40gb ps3s thinking they are bc, since he sees many customers that would have done so at his shop if he hadn't informed them

Brandname is important in Europe but it is too in NA (so obvious !!)
In fact, the problem is not the PSX brandname, the problem is the MS brandname that is strong in NA (thx Xbox1 that sold mostly in NA and thx that Xbox is an american product), and is weak in Europe
(what is MS ?, what do I need to buy the Xbox360 since the PS3 will play all the game I want to play with some extra exclusive games MGS/FF/GT ..)

Hehe finally from time to time, you can make a good point.

Of course, for somebody interested in hd movies, the ps3 is the best console and thats what i say to people asking for advice.  Thanks to the PS3, i have a good HD player and HD movie with it, Casino Royal. :) 

And of course, i advice the PS3 to the people who are fans of Gran Turismo, Final Fantasy and Metal Gear Solid.

But i will advice fans of GTA to buy a xbox 360, it would be a very bad advice for the moment to tell them to buy a PS3 for it, sorry.

And really, i think you people have no idea how far the average gamer is misinformed. I often have people who ask Halo for their playstation and some days ago a guy did ask for Mario on the PSP. :)

The failure rate of 360s according to a recent article is still well above industry standards. I assume build quality is an excellent reason to base educated consumer purchases on, actually one of the best.

Educated consumers know the 360 is noisy, includes a power brick which isn't easy to hide and the DVD player rotates discs at high speeds which will cause many issues over time including disc scratching and drive wearing (on PCs drives don't need to constantly spin as most games are (near) fully installed on a harddrive).

Life expectance is of relevance to any consumer device, be it a dish washer or television set. Why would it be any different with regard to console? I think a console should be expected to last at least 5 years for the majority of people, more is of course better. Launch units assuming a constant 30% RRoD failure rate (usually it goes up over time), a majority of users would have had to deal with a system failure within 2 years time.

1/ mrpapaye NEVER said anything about the lake of BC of the 40gb model
he said people wanted a PS3 just because it is a PS console
2/ people buy a PS3 because they have a PS2 and want to upgrade to play PS3 game, not play PS2 games lol !
and remember this : a Xbox360 CANT play PS2 games too ...

 Hmm for a french you dont seem to realize how strong the Playstation brand is strong in your country or mine.

For Europeans, Playstation is synonym of Console because the 1st time gaming has reached mass market in Europe is with the Playstation and it has continued with the PS2.

Thats not the same at all in the USA and in Japan, they have an older videogaming culture and know perfectly that they are other consoles that Playstation.

I think many would be interested in more than 1 game, if interested in GTA and Gran Turismo the PS3 seems the obvious choice, if interested in Halo and GTA the 360 would be obvious.

But still, the most informed consumers will not only take into account the exclusive content Microsoft paid for to get onto the 360 eventually. But also the dev comments that they feel most severely limited by the storage capacity of DVD (assuming a GTA V may well eventually hit the market).
