Forums - Sony Discussion - There was a Time...

There was a time awhile ago when I made the prediction that the PS3 eventually had to pass Microsoft's xbox in this console gen due to all the exclusive support it would receive in Japan after the release of Final Fantasy XIII and Versus XIII, and I also said that the PS3 was destined to sell over 8 Million Units in Japan and become the best selling second place console in Japan.

Well, I really seem to have missed the first part of that prediction because the PS3 never seemed to get the exclusive support from Japan and Versus XIII was never even released; however, it certainly seems that due to its dominance in Europe and the Pal territories, that the PS3 does stand a solid chance of surpassing the 360 at some point in time.

And a lot of people really thought my prediction of the PS3 selling over 8 Million in Japan and becoming the best selling second place console ever in a gen in Japan was pretty ridiculous too.  Now, I'm not really sure what the best selling second place console ever in any gen was in Japan.  Maybe the PC Engine?  However, I have noticed that the PS3 has sold 8.8 Million Units now in Japan, and if a few key titles are released before the end of the gen, I really think it could get as high as 10 Million,  and, much like the PC Engine did against the NES, make it's standing against Wii seem even more impressive before it's retired.

And what about that Vita?  Only a year old and in Japan the Vita is already only 0.4 units sold behind the 360's total numbers since 2005.

What do you think of Sony's impressive showing in Japan this gen?

Impressive? I think it's poor. The PS3 is currently the 11th best selling console of all time in Japan. Selling less than half of the PS1 and a third of the PS2. So the PS3 is a fall of some size in Japan.

The vita is a mess in Japan, nothing more needs to be added.

No console dominates anywhere. Ms, Sony or Ninty..... None of them matches "domination"

Did I miss a whoosh moment here?

According to the figures that I've looked at not including handhelds the PS3 is the 5th best selling console ever in Japan, and it certainly ranks as the best selling second place console ever in any gen (not counting handhelds) in Japan, so...

So what?  It's a poor performance in Japan.  No debate.

It's only sold over twice what the Nintendo 64 sold LTD in Japan and 8 times what the 360 sold, and it's destined to sell over 10 million, so that's definitely not a poor performance in comparison to what most other dedicated consoles have done in Japan.

I think there doing a good job, Id still like 2 see more PS3s and Vita's being sold, but for now I dont see a problem Sonys got a bit on there plate 2 deal with but there doing what they need 2 do and still getting there consoles out the door.

i would say poor preformance from ps3/vita, the ps2 set the bar very high. Ps3 is well its a good console, but when it comes to japan its all about the handhelds.

I'm sorry, but the thread title is practically on its hands and knees begging for this reference:

Anyways, congrats on your prediction OP. =) I think 50% share was quite an outlandish idea, but the console has seen amazing success, after the trouble its had. I wouldn't guage the vita's success on the 360 in Japan, though. :P

Argh, you beat me to it :P

All consoles have sold well this generation, its made for quite a few interesting battles (PS3 vs 360, HD vs Wii, and now in America,  360 vs Wii and in Europe,  Wii vs PS3).

I'm just hoping 8th generation is as fun with as many good games :D
