Forums - Gaming - Fuse - how Insomniac hopes to reinvent Horde Mode

OXM

Welcome to Insomniac Games 2.0 - co-operative gaming obsessives without equal. Speaking to OXM at a recent Fuse event, the company's steely-eyed boss Ted Price has discussed the multiplayer modes you'll be sampling between bouts of gung-ho story-driven tomfoolery.

Here's a snippet from Matt's full interview, which will be published online at some point in the unknowable future. Read all about the game's promising single player in our original Fuse hands-on. Short version: imagine if Mission Impossible was a Gears of War game...

So the new thing you're releasing this time is...

Echelon. It's how funny, people ask me what's the right way to pronounce it. You pronounce it both ways, "eschelon" or "etchelon".

Nice one, and it's sort of a Horde Mode thing right?

It's wave based in that you do fight waves of enemies but we switch out the rules on you all the time. And it's much more of an offensive mode than typical traditional wave modes. It's more of an offensive game mode than most other wave-based game modes in that some of the sub modes, most of the sub modes, in this game mode are offensive, you are actually going after certain things versus just trying to defend yourself.

It's probably better if I go through the six modes. So the first one is probably the most straightforward, that's Carnage. Carnage you're trying to kill everybody, the enemies will show up, work together, but you've got to take them all down with your team. The second, or an other mode, is High-Value Target, where you have a mini-boss who appears in the game and the longer he stays a live the more enemies he brings into the battle with him, so you've got to try to take him down pretty quickly, and they're super aggressive.

So sort of a focus fire.

Yeah, and what's cool, what's fun is that the person who actually scores the killing blow gets a big bonus in terms of fuse credits. There is Hot Zone, which is probably one of our only defensive modes where you are defending an area with a fuse canister in the middle of it, a fuse cell. The fuse cell will recharge your xenotech if you stay near it, but the enemies will try to destroy it, so you've got to keep it going until the time runs out.

There is Prime Threat which is our boss round - Prime Threat takes one of the larger bosses in the game and you've just got to surive, try to take him down. There's Critical Drop, Critical Drop where throughout the maps we will drop big boxes full of supplies and cash and weapons, and the enemies and you are racing to get them, and the enemies will destroy them if they get there first but if you get there you get some pretty cool stuff. You get weapons you normally can't pick up.

Anybody sold? Price and his colleague Brian Allgeier have insisted elsewhere that there's never a bad time for IP.

i'd hate to think so. it would suck to think insomniac's lost its touch. i like wht i've seen so far. i'm not sure wht the big deal is? if anything i would focus on a single player game with this focus. i think it fits best.

Something about a study focus (I.e. E.A. Made them change the game.). Though that could just have been the game's style.

i mean they just give that CoD look. it just looks really generic

I just watched the Overstrike cinematic trailer again and it had a lot more style, Fuse looks generic and OverStrike was a better name in my opinion.

This is exactly the opposite of what happened with Borderlands which when first revealed had a generic look but then they changed it to its cel shaded style and made it stand out even more.
