Does he enjoy gaming on his computer? If that's the case, and his computer is powerful enough to play the latest and greatest games, I would recommend PS3. Many -- though obviously not all -- great Xbox titles are available on PC or on PS3.

If he doesn't play on PC, then it's pretty much a dead heat.

The problem with this sort of thread is that biased sony fans will say the ps3 is the best and biased xbox fans will say the xbox is best. It really depends on what your friend is looking for. If he is interested in shooters, wrpgs and likes multiplayer online games then an xbox may be preferable. If he likes jrpgs, action-adveture and platformers, or if he wants free online MP or maybe a blueray device then the ps3 is the best.

to answer your question he has to see what every console offers and see what he likes more
PSN/PS+ vs xbox live
compare exclusives and type of games both MS and Sony offer and about to release in the future

Personally i would say PS3 any day
