Forums - Sales - $299-$399 ps3 price point a crucial factor

4 out of 5 PS2's sold in the US were sold for $199 or less (mine was $179). $199 is the magic number, and MS will reach it before Sony.

So you don't think that people would see 2 $100 price reductions in 12 months for a system which is being outsold (by a wide margin) by one system in every region and another system in North America would look desperate?

The only way I think Sony could pull it off is if Microsoft reduced the XBox 360 by $100 and they matched the price reduction ...

I think the sooner anyone can lower a price for any device, the better with respect to sales. Cheaper is better.

IMO, there is no scenario where keeping the price higher, longer, will improve sales. (it might improve revenue, but not units sold.)

Consumers will go wii no matter what, even if the ps3 has every AAA title out now.

The reason is its price.

Wrong answer. If you look at how much people are willing to pay for a used PS3 (345$ at Amazon.com) vs. a used Wii (420$ at Amazon.com), it's clear that the price is not the driving force behind the stellar Wii sales.

You missed a key point in your response, we aren't talking about the Wii but about the PS3.  They don't appeal to all the same people so they might need to use different strategies.

ps3 drops to 299 i might consider buying it as a bluray player-and ONLY a blu-ray player

not One game interests me on the ps3.

not mgs not gta not ff nada.

Normal Consumers will go to Wii because it is.

Gamers (Elitist, Esoteric, Frightened of losing there treasured and exclusive activity) will goto which ever console they see as the best with the best games and prospects.

I would cite regulation, but I know you will simply ignore it.

have you considered that you are not going to see a price drop because you guys are heading head strong straight into a recession?

Spending on high ticket items like the PS3 is likely going to be down this year or the next, the Wii may just become the 'only' console to have because of it's lower price. It will always be the cheapest.

Recession will not be good. Stupid Bush.

Exactly OriGin. The dollar could easily lose another 10% versus the Yen. A recession will cause pain to all of Sony. Sony's margin overall is well under 5%. Sony and Nintendo will lose billions of dollars because of this. They simply cannot afford to keep funding unprofitable ventures if there is a recession. Nobody can.

If price was the factor, then why did the cube end up selling the least amount of hardware last gen?

considering that PS2 hit the $199 mark in 2002 and it's currently 2008, i'd say it has more to do with the 'magic' of time rather than price.

^^good point.

and as said before, you're assuming that neither of the other two consoles would get price drops in response.

With each Wii only costing $158 to make, Nintendo could drop the price low enough to make any PS3 price-cut (even to $300) look laughable.
