Forums - Sony - DOWN PERISCOPE: Sony to drop PS3 to 299$

i doubt it - Sony doesn't wanta lose even more per unit sold. anyways, even if it's true, Ninty and MS will both drop their prices to maybe $180 and $200 respectively. However, I still remain skeptical.

Hmm, I'm doubtful about this rumor. Probably there's some pack-in deal, one of those get-a-credit-card or buy-an-HDTV deals where they lower the price of the PS3, but winter sales are always slow, and the great games aren't out there just yet. A $299/299EUR price-point is unquestionably coming this year, and will supercharge PS3 sales, but I still think November 2008 is far more likely.

That said, (1) I didn't think they'd come out with a $399/399EUR model until this spring -- I was wrong by six months -- and (2) Sony is making screaming amounts of money in Europe (399EUR = $600 US), so they have room to match any price reductions by Microsoft.

Financially, the price cut makes sense, consoles have historically been sold at a loss until the tail end of their lifetime. The only consoles not sold at a loss are the Sega Saturn(sold at the price to manufacture) and the Nintendo Wii(sold at a $100 profit for Nintendo). Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony make most of its money off of game licensing, not the actual console. For every game released, they developer must pay $10,000 worth of licensing fees to Sony(its traditionally been $20,000 for all 3 companies, but this was another cut Sony made to encourage developers recently). They also make a bulk of their profit from peripherals, like memory cards and controllers.

...

BTW, the bolded part is completely incorrect.

That is simply the cost of a devkit - and its only Sony that had such a ridiculous price on a PS3 devkit (Wii kits start from $2k).

Sounds to me like a typing error. Could be what he meant initially.

 Consoles: Wii & PS3.

It'd be extremely impressive, brave and risky.

Previous generations have shown that merely dropping the price hugely does not guarantee success (The GC is the best example of this) but who knows how it may pay off this time. However if this is true I would say the chance of the PS3 ever getting out of the red as far as hardware goes would be nil.

No, we don't need more hype of a price drop, that just lower sales.

a price drop in March to 300$, the same day as MGS4 releases.

Didn't expect this so soon. If indeed it is true, then this would be a massive boost to the PS3. However, the competition is likely to reply in turn, so I wouldn't go as far as to say that a cheaper PS3 will threaten the status quo. ;)

There is certainly no need to fear a PS3 price drop as has been suggested. Quite the contrary actually - A PS3 price drop will result in reductions across the board. Nintendo can respond in kind with new colours and the Wii's first price reduction - ideas that were first hinted at, as far back as 2006.

don't really believe it. I would expect a smaller drop in April with mgs4/gta. On the other hand this would finish off the 360. Coming under 300 would help the ps3 more than any reasonable price cuts ms can do.

Well, now that they have wont the HD movie format war, it might be a move to try and win this HD console format war.
