Is this a serious question?

Everything you said, with an emphasis on Mario, MonHun, and the price.

Honestly, I can't think of a reason for Japanese gamers in general to prefer the Vita. Of course an individual might choose it because of a certain game or two, but for the most part the 3DS is just a way better deal for them.

Yes and I'd argue price doesn't even matter

what happened to the option, it is a better system overall?

monster hunter.

It's not one or two reasons, but a lot of them.

Obviously it's mainly because of the games. 3DS has a sidescroller and a 3D Mario, Mario Kart, Animal Crossing, Pokemon, Monster Hunter, Resident Evil, Layton, plus tons and tons of other important franchises, both big and small. Vita just doesn't have the same sort of heavy hitters.

Also yes, it's cheaper, but imo the games are the bigger reason why 3DS is far more popular.

All the other reasons listed in the OP -portability, Streetpass stuff, multiplayer, memory cards- are added bonuses that together all add up, but aren't the main reasons Japan prefers 3DS over Vita.

Ragnarok Odyssey sort of like a Monster Hunter game isn't it?

Isn't LittleBigPlanet Vita a good answer to Mario?

PS-Vita already has it's Super Smash Bros or closest equivalent in PS All-Stars Battle Royale while the 3DS equivalent is 1-2+ years out.

I suppose there isn't any Mario Kart equivalent, but the moment Sonic and All-Stars Racing Transformed ends up on Vita wouldn't that be an equivalent?

No. There are no equivalents to those games.

You cannot counter a Mario game with a similar game and expect it to draw consumers away. It's Mario.

You cannot counter Mario Kart with Sonic Racing and say they are equal. It's Mario Kart.

A popular IP like Mario Kart, Monster Hunter or Animal Crossing will sell based on the name of the game even before you factor in how good it is.

Here is the thing

Nintendo manages to sell more of Brain Age etc than Sony manages to sell games like Resistance, Killzone, God of War, inFamous, and Uncharted

You mension Animal Crossing and Layton... Nintendo managed to have huge sales success for both those when they were new, while Sony struggles to sell a ton of system exclusive like Gravity Rush on PS-Vita.

I think problem is with Sony's marketing approach or brand and not with their actual products which are very good.

of course nintendo handhelds are ball busting but it is an interesting question as to why sony would leave their most important handheld market with nothing to play

Because its cheaper. We mustn't forget its own sales were a bit crap until the price drop.

A bit crap, but still significantly less crap than Vita's. Which begs the question -- since there was no Mario and no Monster Hunter before the price drop, what is it about Vita? There's no question it has a much better library than 3DS had through August 2011, and the console can be bought for the same price. Why isn't it selling well? Surely it's not just the memory cards.
