Making Friends With Wii U

Friend Codes are dead. And it's about time.

For months, even years, many have wondered if and when Nintendo would finally move away from the Friend Codes that were so cumbersome and annoying on previous systems. The publisher hadn't really offered many specifics with regards to Wii U. Today we were able to finally test out that environment, and see how you'd be able to connect with people you know - or simply play games with.

Simply put, Friend Codes are gone, replaced by your Nintendo Network ID, which is effectively a username. Your Network ID can be set up when you add a new Mii to your Wii U OS, or later through settings. After registering your ID to an e-mail address, you're able to use this to connect to others through the master Friend List 'application', which is accessible from the system's Home Menu (which you get to by pressing 'Home' on the GamePad).

I still don't fucking understand why so many places are not doing mid night launches, it's almost like they have no systems to sell.

I was looking to order a Wii U today (just out of interest), but my prefered place is out of consoles already. Didn't expect that. Oh well, I am in no hurry anyway, although NSMBU, MSF:HDE and NAN are very, very, very tempting.

Still though, I blame Nintendo for my problem. They should have made me want the console more, now there's perhaps no way I'll get one on November 30th.

yeah you are way way late, I pretty much rushed to pre order right on the day pre order became possible. I've learned my lesson since PAX Prime 2012, I'm never missing another PAX Prime or a console I want on launch ever again.

This is old news :p

Welcome to 2002 seems more appropiate (when XBL launched, with account/user names).

lol.. here they come.

how about start with 2000 instead.. jus to be sure.. xbl project system planning probably happened then.. ya know.. "Welcome to the year 2000 Nintendo" sounds good!
