Just pointing out that Nintendo is still pumping money into more "mature" software as we speak and they are doing it the right way by not using their in-house resources and relying on development studios who have experience with that kind of stuff. |
Good, then. Glad to hear it; I had forgotten about Bayonetta.
With 3DS, DS, Wii, and the upcoming WiiU I don't think Nintendo really had a lot of time to making a game like... ZombiU. Right now they need to convince 3rd party for their new console. In the other hand and I'm really sure about this, right now Nintendo dev internal team need to create a new Zeda or Mario games for WiiU.

Soundwave, that's a perfectly fair and interesting question to ask.
However, I think Nintendo already has a winning strategy. By focusing on family-friendly entertainment, the company provides something the others do not. Moreover, there will always be a new generation of kids interested in gaming, so the audience keeps replenishing itself all the time.
Also, I would like to argue against the myth that Nintendo ONLY caters to children. Nintendo makes games for everyone, and that is part of its philosophy and part of its appeal. Maintaining its brand is probably more important than releasing a few M-rated titles.
I would also like to argue against the myth that somehow M-rated content imbues a video game with excellence. It does not. Yes, there should be diversity in video games; there should be M-rated games. But a game is not automatically better because it has sex, drugs, violence, gore, and other adult content.
And lastly, the majority of video games and consoles are bought by so-called "casual" players. That goes for Wii; that goes for 360; that goes for PS3.
Rant over :)
Nintendo is something of a family company but a larger reason why is because Miyamoto and several of the older creators that went on to higher standings in the company never really wanted to make those types of games.
For Miyamoto, he's gone on record in the past of not wanting to make games he couldn't play with his kids (grandchildren at this point). Some of the younger guys obviously wouldn't mind going for more "mature" subject manner but at this point, Nintendo is unlikely to do anything like that outside of through second party developers.
