Forums - Gaming - A Final Fantasy question/discussion

My question is this.  Do you prefer the roots of FF and thus affiliate mostly with FF 1-7, & 9, or do you prefer the "new look" that FF 8 brought to the series, which following in FF 10 - future?

A very open ended question I know (even to the point that some would question whether 6 was indeed old school, but I feel like it was, and that it was 8 that truly went a totally new direction)

My personally I enjoy the roots of FF, and 9 is my favorite (though I must admit the last one I played was 10)

Hope all this makes sense, and.........................commence discussion.

I like the "roots" version's 100 full

The super-deformed look was good for it's time, but I relate better to the more human character models that the series has evolved into. When Rikku smiles, it makes me smile......except in Final Fantasy X-2. That game sucked.

I liked the classic ones more. Final Fantasy VI is my favorite. Best RPG after Chrono Trigger.

The root of the series, because frankly the new look games have sucked for the most part. The only "new look" FF game I liked was FFX. Honestly, it has nothing to do with the look and everything to do with the gameplay. Square Enix has seemed to be more focused on making a pretty movie than a deep and involving RPG when it comes to the recent Final Fantasy efforts.

The Roots are my favorite (particularly FFIV and VII), but if you combined the combat system from FFX and some of the characters and the story from FFVIII you would have had one HELL of a game. That being said I definitely prefer FFX to FFVIII.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Thompson

I perfrer 1-6. I still don't understand why people like 7. That was a prime case of using technology just because it's available when you really shouldn't. I've seen Atari games with better art direction and poorly translated anime with better plots.

6 i'd say wasn't old school though so much as the translation from the roots to the new version, what with the steam punk tech outside of Airships. Sure the earlier Final Fantasies had tech too(even 1)... but these were regulated to small dungeons of past great tech empires long since fallen.

Oddly enough the Final Fantasy games seemed to of lost all their humor and most of their personality when they got rid of the midget characters too.  I don't know why.

I'm playing FFX right now and I can tell you, I really hate it. There's basically a cutscene 1 every 10 seconds and I can't skip it. I kinda like FFXII, FFVII was okay but I only played 1/3 of the game. FFIV was probably my most favorite game out of all but Chrono Trigger is still the best-if only the FF series followed that style.

I like them all. I do however prefer ff7/ff8/ff10 style. The thing about FF is it can be different, it can be a new style each game. FF works because they are all separate worlds :D with some similar elements.
