Keep in mind I haven't played Halo 4 yet, but I'll give my input anyway. As far as pure visuals are concerned, I would personally say Uncharted 3 still looks better. To be honest though, the difference between the two are so small that it's really going to come down to your personal preference of the artistic direction. However, I will say Halo 4's more open gameplay plus excellent graphics are more impressive than Uncharted's graphics depending on what you're looking for.

That's not make a sandbox game
.
Halo 4 have more os less open environments than Borderlands??? Just to me understand because Borderlands is not sandbox too.
Aldro have you played Halo 4?
You keep mentioning stuff like particle effects and textures, two areas where Halo 4 is phenominal at. As well as its lighting and facial animations.

Halo 4 having less open environments than Borderlands gives it the advantage of looking better. Just as Uncharted 3 being even less open than Halo allows it to be better looking.
Its not about thinking and going "Yeah this is worse but its only because the game does that, therefore it is more impressive". After all, who can judge if simulating an ocean is more impressive than having an open level where you are free to play the way you see fit.
What we however can compare, is what our eyes find have the more attention to detail and it is only common sense that small areas that allows the developers to focus on making textures by hand and working each level to the full will end up being the "looker" of the two.

Yeah, I havent beaten it yet so keep it spoiler free for me. Textures are not as good as my fave linear games. It makes me wonder if you have played Uncharted 3 but I wont go there.
The lightning is insane, probably the best indeed! Facial animations are pretty good yeah. The CGI is where its at best though ;).

With all due respect my friend: Nothing was sacrificed you say: Yeah sure because the game itself is open. Think of it like this: Will that area not look better if it was smaller and you could focus on every tiny tidbit detail as well as save space to have higher quality textures due to it not being as demanding? Or would a much larger space where you just cant focus on every little tiny detail, and theres a lot of copy paste going on (im over exaggerating) in order to make that room complete. At the end of the day: Were you to look at both games side by side without any knowledge of what is what (Halo is more open, Uncharted for example is not) do you realise which would be more of the "looker"? Do any of you understand that if 343 made a game similar to Uncharted (im not saying they should and that you want it), but i am confident that the game would look drastically better. When discussing visuals and visuals alone, just use common sense. It really isnt that complicated. Now were this thread renamed to "Halo 4 best technical and aesthetic game of this gen", then that's atleast a much more valid thing to say. |
I am not sure if you're arguing my statement as incorrect or saying that it's correct but if we focus on visuals alone Halo 4 isn't better than other games.
In some sense I agree with your statement that different types of games are optimized for visuals, aka 'eye candy'. However in my opinion, different types of games can be compared as well.
When doing that, one must take everything in to account. Things like frame rate and how much it dips, draw distance, pop in, character models, lighting, freedom of camera...etc.
Hence visuals become a technical achievement measurement, and not just screenshot vs screenshot.
There are games like Crysis 2 and God of War which look amazing in screenshot but they use visible tricks to achieve that level of detail (fixed camera, limited draw distance, retarded AI).
In my opinion, Uncharted 2 and 3 and Halo 4, when looked in the grand scheme of things are the cream of the crop for current console gaming showcasing what's technically possible in terms of visual presentation.
God of War 3, Uncharted 2 and 3, MGS4, Resistance 3, and Heavy Rain look better. I would also argue games with unique art styles and cell shading are better looking in some cases like R&C: ACiT, LBP2, Journey, and soon Puppeteer but that's more just personal preference.

of course I played Uncharted 3. Im not saying Halo 4 has the best textures, Id say UC3, GOW3, and Gears 3s character models are the best.
But Halo 4 8s right in that same area and your mention8ng its textures like they are weak
