The statement sent to VG247 states that 10,000 worldwide game stores and general retailers are holding midnight launches to ring in the Halo 4 launch, that will “spark midnight frenzy” – Better take a weapon or something to defend yourself with if you’re attending.

It's just marketing speak. Remember, Microsoft people said Reach would outsell Black Ops. They know it will only have the "biggest entertainment launch of the year" title for a week.

Let them have their week. It's still pretty good that it'll be the best launch for the first 45 or so weeks of the year. Microsoft and 343 seem to have put a lot of work into this, so credit where it's due. It'll be a huge launch, it'll likely be profitable in the first 24 hours just like Reach was and I'm sure people will be happy with their new chapter of Master Chief.
