You want to know what the alternative most nations in the west that are first-world? It is a nationalized healthcare system. There is no insurance people pay for.
And pardon a bit of irony here. You aren't from the United States, so why are you complaining? You don't even have a clue what it is like to live under this system.

People don't pay for insurance in nationalised healthcare systems? lol, right. Guess all that "National Insurance" went to nothing, then. Clearly, you have no clue what it's like to live under the British system. If you did, you'd know why I'd be complaining about the path of American healthcare.
I love the way you feel the need to tell me that the rest of the "first world" has a national health program, and then acknowledge that I actually come from somewhere in the "rest of the world".
But is that the box you live in? For you, are the only alternatives what America has now, and what the rest of the "first world" has? Is "freedom" so far gone from your mindset, that you don't even consider it an alternative?

What other values do you have besides "freedom"? Myself, I have a multitude of others, and realize "freedom" isn't what most people want. What most people want is existence bending towards their wills. "Freedom" is merely a label thrown around to have things not get in the way of their wills being carried out. Freedom in the hands of an idiot is hell for others. Freedom in the hands of powerless individuals, who lack resources, is hell to them. Freedom alone says nothing about direction or what to do, or even shoulds and ideals.
For me, the preference for healthcare would be what works to help people maxmize the longevity and quality of their lives. And on that count, the American system is very expensive and delivers mediocre results.
But hey, if your own value is "freedom" them more power to your Libertarian/Anarchist view. Needless to say, most people have more values than "freedom".
