It's because japanese company's have to deal with a too strong yen for example

in 2007 Sony sell a TV in the UK for £500 at 225 yen/£ = Sony getting 112,500 yen

in 2012 at 120 yen/£ = Sony getting 60,000 yen

Good bought a plasma TV from them that crapped out in 14 months and they refused to help me since a I was like 45 days outside of a year warranty. I also bought a surround sound system from them years back they only last about 2 years. I will never by another panasonic electonic again.
