Yeah i use that all the time.
In fact when i checked out how to do it, verizon just so happened to be offering twice the data plan size for my rate so i ended up getting a bonus for checking it out.
Ps: i have the 3g model but didnt want to get a plan for it. Tethering is just as good.

I have a good data plan on my phone too so it's a no-brainer for me.
