Forums - General - So I just discovered that a church I have been going to for about 2 years now thinks you will go to Hell if you get divorced!

I don't have a religion as i have my own beliefs about what reality and life, the universe is, no disrespect to anyone who is religious but I don't believed in been preached to about what life is, but everyone needs a belief and if going to church is what makes that person happy then that's all that matters

Well, according to the Christian religion only something like 0.003% of people are allowed in heaven anyway, so I say you go back and get yourself some damn coffee.

What ?

The brits found a clever solution to that problem:
If the church doesn't like you divorcing, just found your own church.

Lol, only if your King gets tired of chopping the heads off his wives.

The Catholic Church has a similar belief. You have to get an annulment.

It basically boils down to this. When you get married you are making a promise for life. That's why you say, "until death do us part." Since the church doesn't recognize a legal divorce, you can't get married of be intimate with anyone else. The Church would see it as cheating since you are considered still married to the first person.

I don't know all the rules on annulments, but I do know that it's difficult to get one in the Catholic Church.

Now, with that said. Jesus died for our sins. We are sinners and God still loves us even though we sin. The Church may have a rule, but I personly don't think God would be so noneunderstanding as to turn away from a good person of faith if they tried to stay married but couldn't make it work.

My grandmother was Catholic, got divorced, was obviously excommunicated for it, but when her former husband died tens of years later, they reversed it and actively tried to get her back in again. Their rules make no sense.

Well you've already "sinned" so just keep drinking their coffee, there's not much you can do about it...

Well there is, actually, but I doubt you want to put much effort into it.

Just go in there and drink the coffee then go somewhere else. It will probably take them awhile to figure out that you are just there for the coffee.

The way I see it, if you believe in the religion, you should follow the original text of the bible "precisely". Its not giving you advice, it's giving you the word of God.... So why the hell do people keep trying to find loopholes in it. Personally I'm atheist, but what I don't understand is that if this is the word of God, how can you possibly say "Ok I like this rule ill follow that one. I don't like this other one because it's inconvenient to me, so I won't follow this one." As far as im concerned 99% of the worlds population are secret atheists who refuse to admit it.

The whole bible isn't as straight forward as the 10 Commandments. The English version is a translation of a translation. Most of the new bible is stories meant to teach a lesson about how to treat each other or how to be more like God. The new testament replaces many of the teachings of the old testament.

Different churches interpret it differently. It's not a matter of finding loop holes or picking and choosing. It's a matter of deciding what it means to you.

The religious people of the world are not secret atheists. They are just regular flawed people who have faith. That just doesn't make sense to you because you don't have that faith.

Religion is just a history that they tell.
