Games that are rooted in good gameplay will always be good to play no matter how much they age. Games that really heavily on things like graphics, and I know many people might not like hear this but it is the truth so I am going to say it and STORY do not age well and seem like a chore to play after many years

QFT.

There are plenty of 16 bit games I couldn't play at its time, and I've been playing some of those recently for the first time through  *cough*emulation*cough* and they're awesome. Played Phantasy Star IV for the first time this year and it was better than all the PS2 Final Fantasies combined.

I think nostalgia does play a role in my enjoyment of old classics. For example, I've purchased Mega Man 2 on Virtual Console, I absolutely loved replaying through it but the thing is that I know that game inside out. If I was starting fresh, dying all the time, maybe I wouldn't enjoy it so much.

Most old games are crap, especially a lot of early 3D games. Great gameplay mechanics always get refined and improved in newer games, the only old games that hold up are ones with really simplistic mechanics with no depth that there isn't really anything to refine upon.

I respectfully disagree.

While the polygons in some early 3D games look a little rough around the edges in 2012, I don't think it's fair to dismiss the entire generation.

I'm of the opinion that video games reached a creative and artistic peak between the end of the fourth generation and the beginning of the sixth generation. There are tons of great video games from the past five years, but if I was to make a top 20 list it would be filled mostly with games from 1994-2002.
