Forums - Gaming - Report: PS3 comback, shallow Wii, tepid portables in '08

Legend don't worry about Nintendo 3rd party 2-3+ million sellers, you worry about the PS3 having any 3rd party game reaching those numbers this year. As of now only 4 3rd party titles for the PS3 have sold more than one million copies out of which two are football games. Give us a break with your antics.

The problem with Nintendo's lineup is it's really only SSBB, SMK, and Wii Fit then a big question mark for the rest of the year. Maybe they'll pull out Star Fox and Animal Crossing but will they be big enough to compete with what will likely be a lot of big 360/PS3 multiplatform games as well as the exclusives for each of those consoles?

I expect the 360/PS3 to maintain a more fleshed out library thanks to third parties remaining timid about putting major AA or AAA games on the Wii.

But it sounds like we agree that the Wii, 360 and PS3 are all contenders when it comes to "cream of the crop" games that sell, say, 3 million+ based on previous iterations, which Mario Kart and SSBB are likely to do, and even Wii Fit, despite having no previous iteration to base calculations on, is already well past 1 million in Japan alone and still gaining ground rapidly, so at this point I'd say we have strong data that it will hit that mark, too.

And then, as you onte, Animal Crossing is likely to come out at Christmas, too. It's not the AAA games that the Wii is lacking, it's the No More Heroes style, not-quite-Smash-Brothers-but-still-popular type games.

How many million+ selling Wii third party games do you think will come out in 2008?  What about 2-3 million+ Wii third party games?

Personally, with the size of the Wii's userbase and the rate that it is growing, I'm expecting about twice the performance from third parties in 2008 than we have seen to date. This would mean that we will see 3 to 5 third party games sell more than 2 Million units, 6 to 12 games games selling between 1 and 2 Million units, and 12 to 18 third party games selling between 500,000 and 1 Million units.

Well Nintendo released a list of games that are coming out for the first half of the year so could you list 3 of the third party 2+ million sellers and 6 or 7 of the 1 million+ sellers?

Well, roughly 40% of software sales happen in the months of November and December with a most of the best selling games being released in August through December so we don't really have a good picture at the moment.

Beyond that, I don't see why my prediction is unrealistic being that Worldwide Wii software outsells XBox 360 software (even without Wii Sports and Wii Play), as more people own Wii systems the software sales will increase, and Nintendo is not going to release dramatically more software this year which should mean many third party games will see sales increases.

So, they list four PS3 games (three of which aren't guaranteed to be great), and the PS3 is going to be awesome in '08.

Then they list three Wii games (all three of which are guaranteed to be great), and the Wii somehow "lacks depth."

Nevermind the fact that the Wii has more exclusives appearing for it than the PS3 thus far. And the fact that more announcements are sure to be on the way. And the fact that Nintendo never hypes projects more than six months or so in advance, unless they're something huge (SMG, SSBB. Hell, Mario Kart Wii wasn't even on the radar until a month ago.)

@ Legend11: Read the "Wii games in the first half of '08" thread and look at how many exclusives are there. There's a ton.

WOW! how would you know that sony games aren't going to be great!!! have you played them? Sigh... typical dumb troller, plus Nintendo never hyped??? Give me a break! you want prove how wrong you are? SSMB have been hyped for almost a year. EVERY company hype their game you dumbwit. So QFT!!! BTW I don't hate Ninty, I just hate losers like you bashing without knowing.

Oh yeah frybread, you can QFT talking too!

Man I'm so sick of trollers, so many of them. And that just so sad & lifeless.

Well, Nintendo has (in the past) fallen into the trap of announcing a game years before it was released (mainly because they believe it is better to release a great game late than an average game on time). Earlier this year, Iwata (Nintendo's President) said that they will no-longer announce a game more than a few months before the game is expected to be released ...

Ummm...animal crossing and Mario party are casual strongholds, each will sell 3 million plus, you really need to take your head out of the ground

And Nintendo could always release Mario tennis, golf, baseball and basketball

Predictions:Sales of Wii Fit will surpass the combined sales of the Grand Theft Auto franchiseLifetime sales of Wii will surpass the combined sales of the entire Playstation family of consoles by 12/31/2015 Wii hardware sales will surpass the total hardware sales of the PS2 by 12/31/2010 Wii will have 50% marketshare or more by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  It was a little over 48% only)Wii will surpass 45 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  Nintendo Financials showed it fell slightly short of 45 million shipped by end of 2008)Wii will surpass 80 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2009 (I was wrong!! Wii didn't even get to 70 Million)

Not to mention that the Wii is still supply constrained.

That won't help it, getting production fixed and more supply will help it, hopefully they'll bump up production by march

Yea this doesn't hekp anything. I think that data is positive for PS3 but this doesn't mean enough to warrent a PS3 boom. The way trends are gong PS3 will pick up in Japan with more games that are to their liken i.e. ArmorCore, MGS4, Yakuza 3, The Last Reminant and White Knight Story. Europe will continue to choose Japan over America and pick PS3s and a slight rise in sells in NA with the next price cut, release of 2nd gen titles and the death of HD-DVD. But all in all it will do well and even close the gap some but still be in third place WW at the end of 2008.

As for the Wii, like it or not but i going to say that SSBB is going to be the "Metroid Prime" of 2008, the core will run out to buy it, all 1 mil that bought Metroid Prime. Mario Kart will be the "Mario Party" of 2008, as families will pick it up over the course holiday season and play it together. As for Wii Fit, well it going be the Wii all over again. People will buy it up and there won't be enough to keep on the shelves which in return will generate more hype just to get one. Most people will be happy and the rest will wake up with "Wii hangover" again.

I am just saying....

I'm just saying...

Yeah, sure it is... That would be why it sold millions of copies then...

Of course. Everyone felt pity after that abomination and gave SE teir money under the promise that the next game would be better. And then there was FFIX.
