Forums - Gaming - Sony fighting to stay relevant?

Sony is fighting to stay relevant as a tech brand in todays world. As a gaming option, 60 million in sales is astounding for a third place competitor. Microsoft and Nintendo combined could barely reach those sales last gen. It means people still know their quality and in the gaming industry they are more than relevant. Kaz Hirai being promoted is an obvious example of a shift change going around and the videogame sector is going to be put in a high area of importance. The Vita has a long way to go though. Sony didnt think out completely what they were going to put out for games on that handheld. That was just dumb and that investment will cause them to bleed. Happily the PS3 is profiting and can offset some of the bleeding the Vita is causing.

GT does not equal Halo because of one word: frequency. One full GT game per gen isnt that big a deal over the course of 7 years. This whole gen, compare total Halo game sales vs total GT game sales. Fact is that franchise takes too damn long to stay relevant.

Uncharted is the new king because it has more lifetime franchise sales this gen then GT.

Using that logic, you could say Madden has been bigger than Grand Theft Auto this generation.

Nevertheless, frequency shouldn't be too much of a problem next generation since PD said GT6 wouldn't require as much time to develop as GT5 (something about them using GT5 to build a new framework and GT6 would use that framework). And Sony said future Playstation will be easier to develop for. I expect GT to release every 3-4 years instead of 6, next gen.

The biggest problem with SONY is their branding!

Companies like Apple and Nintendo have huge brand power. They're able to sell large volumes based on brand. Those that buy their products believe their products are good, and that's really all you need in a today's market.

Vita situation, PS3 red ink, lost marketshare are the big 3.

PS3's only saving grace is their ability to pump out core retail games. But again, aside from the vocal minority who praise Sony for this, sales of such exclusives are dropping fast every year (looking at LBP karting, PASBR, and Sly preorders).

Sonys success in past gens was due to the 3rd party industry more then anything else. Now that costs are high, multiplats are just the way to go. And there goes Sonys former ace in the hole. Cause lets be honest, Sony has no Mario or Halo to carry the console.

Gamecube had Mario. Sold terribly

Xbox had Halo. Sold quite bad.

Just a few games don't carry consoles. The wii was successful thanks to the motion controls and the 360 for many other reasons (better price than the ps3, the first HD console out, many exclusive games etc).

Using my logic, yes Madden has generated more money and sold more copies this gen then GTA has this gen. Which is 100% true. And its allready been 2 years since GT5. So 2013 is allready out of the question. 2014....we shall see. But im sure you know this point is neither here or there.

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

More doom articles I see, but for once they're not aimed at Nintendo.

I'm not talking about more money or total sales. I'm talking about which franchise is the biggest, which was JustThatGamer's point. He was saying how Big those games were. Then you came in and said Uncharted was Bigger than GT.

So again, you must also agree that Madden is bigger than Grand Theft Auto?  Not which has made more money. Or which has the higher combined sales total. Do you agree that Madden is bigger than Grand Theft Auto?

About GT, fair enough. But you said "Cause lets be honest, Sony has no Mario or Halo to carry the console."

Implying that Sony lacks an IP that could move a console. Obviously, that's not the case considering they have Gran Turismo.

The low hardware sales of the Gamecube didn't even matter to Nintendo, and it's because of their popular IPs. They managed to make a profit with the GC thanks to strong software sales, certain games they released on Gamecube continued to sell for the entire lifespan of the system.
