It's certainly doable at that price. Sony just won't be making a modest profit, more like a massive loss on each system sold.

So basically: 6x the power of PS3 for 35k yen = losing money?

But as far as I understand it the WiiU is 3-4x the power of PS3 and making a profit at 26k yen...?

I doubt the Wii U is 3 or 4x more powerful than the PS3.  And yes, 6x the power of the PS3 would mean a black hole for Sony.  It's so ludicrous that they'll probably go that route.

how much more powerful do you reckon wiiu will be then? and how much more powerful do you think ps4 will be?

Probably 1.5 to 2x more powerful.

And like I've been saying since the last month and a half, I don't think the PS3 (or the 720) will be a monumental leap.  I expect next gen to be like the sixth gen in terms of hardware parity - PS2 (Wii U), Gamecube (PS3 or 720), and XBox (PS3 or 720).

Regarding these last turn of events I'm gonna go a head and make a prediction.

PS4 will launch in October 2013.
It'll cost between 30.000 - 35.000 yen, which will be something like $/€349 - $/€399. Sony will be making a modest profit (at the very least) from the get go.
And it'll be about 5-6x as powerful as PS3 (<-- I have no idea if this is doable considering the price I just listed, it's just a hunch).
They might even launch a StreamStation for 15.000 - 20.000 yen ($/€199 - $/€249) without any Blu-ray and disc reading capabilities; this'll be a Gaikai console of sorts.

That's my thoughts regarding their financial situation.

HEY!  Don't go making predictions about Sony's future.  There's a time and a place for that.

Obviously it's not good for Sony, but I imagine PS4 is a relatively straight forward piece of kit, probably mostly off the shelf PC parts (a 28nm 7xxx GPU, maybe 2GB GDDR5 + 2GB DDR3, decent CPU) optimized for gaming.

Yeah. Sony could just post the list of parts so everyone can just go buy them at the nearest computer retailer and build their own PS4. Save Sony all the trouble of actually doing any R&D and all that silly production stuff.

Those are the leaked specs for PS4 more or less.

They might be, but have you ever seen inside a console? It is not like off the shelf components they put together (well maybe dev kits are) and volla here is a console.  PUttin git all together on an integrated board still costs R&D.

Not to mention the heating situation. There's. reason why a computer tower with the latest and greatest is liquid cooled not too mention the cases are 3-4 times if not larger than a fat ps3 case. I love how we are just slapping all these 300$ parts into a new play station and magically selling it for a reasonable price.
I don't care how many thousands Sony buys to cut costs, and Forget trying to match microsoft.

Oh! sweetah! But I have no predictions for 2014 unless Sony fail to release PS4 in 2013, which in that case I only have one word: d00m!!

I pretty much agree with that.

I just don't get it why WiiU probably just gonna be 1.5x PS3... That's... nothing... Why even get a WiiU then?! If this is the case I understand why the PS360 crowed isn't interested!!

1.5 is still a great deal of power.  50% more power!  I'm not convinced the Wii was 1.5x more powerful than the Gamecube to be completely honest.  While I don't think the Gamecube could run games like Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2 at 60fps with all the shaders and physics going on, or Xenoblade with its complex and expansive geometry, I don't think it was too far behind in terms of tech.

We'll really start to see what the Wii U is made of once Retro, Monolith, and one of EAD's Tokyo Dev Groups gets ahold of it.

All this talk about Wii U's horsepower will be forgotten once we see all these franchises in glorious HD.  Just you wait.

If it's only 50%-100% more powerful it's gonna bomb... There's no reason for the HD crowd to upgrade and WiiU's only gonna sell 20m again...

I sincerely hope you're wrong Keno =) But I'm sure you're right that we'll see the true capabilites when Retro and Monolith unveils their project!

Hahaha no, indeed it didn't! But Nintendo did their own thing back then and skipped the whole HD thing (which probably was kinda dumb looking back; I'm sure it would have had even better numbers by now). I like the GamePad (even though I haven't tried it myself) but I'm not quite sure it'll captivate people like the Wiimotes did...
