Forums - Gaming - Has the iOS6 Maps application screwed up for you?

Its funny reading the facebook integration thing from Iphone users. Ive even heard a guy in Phones 4 U shop ( a staff member ) say its the first for a phone ). I just had to wip out my WP7.5 which is now 1.5 years old and go um no it isn't.

The customer actually laughed which was pretty cool.

But yeah its nice to see Apple improving their OS with the times. Altough the integration needs a lot of work. Especially compared to WP8 integration of Facebook, Twitter, Skype and E-mail clients.

Not a lot of people with first-hand experience of Apple's "awful terrible horrible" Maps software.

Now that I have a couple of weeks with the program, I see some flaws. It's not giving me optimal routes (though it is pretty good at re-calculating routes on the fly as I ignore its non-optimized route). It has struggled to find places that have complex names that in all fairness, I didn't spell correctly. In my experience, Google Maps isn't much better in that regard.

It's definitely a step down from Google Maps, though I would still argue that its shortcomings are offset by turn-by-turn navigation and Siri integration, which are super-useful while driving.

I'm at the moment speaking to somebody who wanted to go to downtown Seattle and the gps took her to the ferry instead so yeah, it's fucked up, she also says it's running much slower on her 4s so she's taking it to apple and wanting ios5 back

I don't know why on earth it would be slower. iOS6 Maps uses vector-based mapping, which is WAAAAAAYYYYY faster than the old raster style used in iOS5.

Even Tim Cook realizes its a horrible... horrible app.

http://www.droid-life.com/2012/09/28/apples-tim-cook-apologizes-for-maps-debacle-says-app-fell-short/

Mr Cook suggests using other 3rd party solutions, including Google's mobile maps (via browser) until they fix their app. But doesn't give a time frame. Its obvious they are working diligently on it, but I wouldn't expect it to be corrected very quickly.

Tim Cook is responding to public criticism, not saying that the app is horrible. It's a PR move to respond to public "outrage".

Have you even used the app?

Yes. I have a lot of friends with iOS6 installed. We always tease each other and have challenges to see who is better. iOS Maps is horrible. Every single one of them can show 100% wrong stuff in general map and/or navigation directions locally and elsewhere. Even to major things like San Diego's Sea World. I really don't know why your so defensive about something you didn't even create.

Apple NEVER apologizes or admits wrong. When iPhone4 had massive connection issues that were easily repeatible, they said you were holding it wrong and said to hold it differently or just get a case. However, they still changed the design by the time the Verizon version launched. Here the CEO, Tim Cook is specifically saying "With the launch of our new Maps last week, we fell short on this commitment [to world-class products]. We are extremely sorry for the frustration this has caused our customers and we are doing everything we can to make Maps better." and then tells its users to USE SOMETHING ELSE "...you can try alternatives by downloading map apps from the App Store like Bing, MapQuest and Waze, or use Google or Nokia maps...".

If that is not saying the app is bad and needs to be replaced, I don't know what is. Sure I used the word horrible, but c'mon... the damn CEO is telling you to use an alternative app. If it was must media twisting things or taking them out of context, then Apple wouldn't have said anything and clearly wouldn't have said to use an alternative.

I'm "defensive" about it because this thread was specifically created for people with personal experience using the app. Most threads I've seen about Maps consist of Android users posting screenshots found elsewhere and have no actual experience using the app. I wanted to get real answers from actual Maps users telling me "this app screwed up when I tried to use it yesterday doing this".

And I don't just do this for Apple... I staunchly defended Google during their single log-in fiasco because it was a necessary move to proceed forward as a unified service. I look at the long-game instead of getting frothy at the mouth over immediate problems with new software and/or features.

And correction... STEVE JOBS never apologized for anything. He was an arrogant ass. A brilliant ass, but an ass none-the-less. Jobs is gone and Cook seems to be a much more level-headed man. A friendlier Apple, Inc is better for everyone and I hope Cook continues down the path he has started.

In short, you're kinda trolling this thread.

So, you ignore the millions of upset iOS6 users who've been all over the web posting THEIR screenshots (obviously not Android users) and instead want to see the personal reflection of a very small minority of people on a website that is dominated by Android users?

I'm not trolling. I figured this was directly related to a thread about people having issues.
