this is what IBM said last year

theres no POWER 7 there, so i dont know where the rumour came

still the WiiU is undoubtfully more powerful than the current HD consoles, by a significant margin, due to its newer GPGPU and 4 times RAM

That doesnt say much really, they confirmed is 45nm tough, so my guess is that the broadway cores will have a rename just like with the gekko becasue of the improvements and possible new design

Yep, a lot of people put a lot of energy into defending the Wii U as being much more powerful than it is.  I was hoping that those people would be correct, but I sort of had a feeling that things would turn out this way.

I wonder now how many think that Wii U isn't overpriced by $50.  Or how many still believe that Wii U can easily do 1080p 60fps on just about any AAA 3D title.  I think it's time for many on this site to start thinking a bit more realistically about the capabilities of this new console.

Just as the Wii was barely capable of anything more than Xbox and Gamecube, such is the Wii U to PS3 and X360.


What are you even talking about? All we got here is saying that it's not (necessarily) Power7. Where does it say that it's weaker than Power7? As far as we know, it could be better.

All I know is that if Watson is capable of making such a stupid mistake ala his twitter feed, then I don't need his stinkin' brains in my WiiU!

 

 

Seriously though, the GPGPU is capable of handling some of what the CPUs in the current consoles are tasked with.  And from what we've heard from companies like Sega, the GPU and memory in WiiU are pretty impressive.

Honestly, I think people need to think about what IBM is (probably) saying ...

The Wii U is using a custom CPU, with a design that is most likely now owned by Nintendo, that will not be marketed as part of the Power7 line of processors. This does not mean that the technology is inferior, it could be be contract issues with Nintendo or it could be that Nintendo's needs were unique and resulted in substantial customization.



Blame IBM for the dumbest naming convention in the history of the universe. "Power" can be nearly anything.

If there is a lesson to be learned, it's to believe nothing you hear on twitter.

Their build on the wiiU was very bad tough.
