Hey, I thought since we got a nice and friendly PS Vita community here, it would be nice if I could start a little trend. A PSP game available on the PS Vita gets suggested by you with a little review and a rating. It would be nice if others can join and do the same, so when you are stumped on a PSP game to get for PS Vita, you can come here and read some reviews and choose from that.
Megaman: Maverick Hunter X
Overview:
Anyone familiar with the Megaman X series, knows it is possibly the most popular of the Megaman different series. This game is a complete remake of the first game Megaman X released on the SNES in the early 90's. It keeps the original story and expands off it and also has a prelude to the story, which will be explained later in the review.
Story:
Megaman Maverick Hunter X stays true to the X series original story. Dr. Light Created X (Megaman), a robot that's technology was way to advance the current technology, so he store him away for the future to find. This led to the future scientist finding him and mass producing robots based off X named Reploids. Though technology was advanced even further, not once were they able to get X's human like emotions into any of these reploids. The others seen it as weakness but the force command he was under while a squad maverick hunter, by the name of Sigma knew the truth. It was a ability that makes him have the ability to surpass what any reploid can ever do. So Sigma betrayed the Maverick Hunters and dragged 8 Strong Reploids with him and became maverick. Which this is where the game actually throughs you in blind. Yes BLIND, the story I just explained isn't apart of the original SNES game and isn't even explained in the actual game for this either, but as a extra.
The Premise without spoilers of the main game is simple, defeat the 8 reploids that went maverick and resolve conflict with sigma.
Gameplay:
The gameplay is a slightly modified version of the SNES original. It isn't using sprites anymore, it is actually completely redone in the 3rd dimension look, but stays true to it's 2d side scrolling style. With buttons pretty basic but exactly how it should be. X - Jump, O - Dash (when you get the dash boots), [] - fire weapon/special weapon (special when equiped), ^ - Shoot X-Buster, L/R - Change Weapon. Every stage has the basic concept of shoot you way to the boss and defeat the Maverick at the end of the stage. Though this game sounds typical, it is a VERY unforgiving game and is only possible to beat with skill, but for extra assistance you can explore areas to get containers, body upgrades, and energy up items.
Even after completing the game, you are only half way done! You get to use a new exclusive character to this version with his own story. It is X's rival Vile.
Presentation:
The game is completely remade in 3D, with redesigned stages. It says true to the original game but adds to the games look, in a great way. Also adds anime cut scenes and a anime movie at a good quality, looks great even upscaled for PS Vita.
Music:
This is a complete masterpiece. It has ALL the music from the original game remixd, but better way to put it is just redone in better quality. As well as some new tracks.
Content:
New Game: choose from 2 difficulties, Normal and Hard mode. (after game completion Vile becomes available)
Movie: This Short Movie is a Prelude to the game, explaining the events that leads to Sigma becoming maverick and why X is so important. The movie is called: 'Megaman: The Day of Sigma'. It runs around 40 minutes. (a option that unlocks after the completion of the game).
Demo of Megaman Powered Up: Yes, that's correct a next Megaman 3D remake also co-exists, sadly not on the PS Store. But the demo is available right on the game.
Verdict:
Story - 8
Gameplay - 9
Presentation - 9
Music - 10
Content/Value - 8.5
Final - 44.5/50
In my Opinion this is a Must Have title at around 428MB and $9.99 to buy on your PSP/PS Vita system (game actually plays better on vita, the game actually slows down and drops frames on Launch Base and at the warning sign before bosses on PSP but PS Vita is a locked FR and I know this because I own the UMD, have played on PSP Go and PS Vita).
