Forums - General - Time Warner: Download Too Much and You Might Pay $30 a Movie

A 40min episode of Heroes or Lost takes around 300MB (in pretty good quality DIVX). A two hour movie should take between 1Gig-2Gig - anything over this is overkill for digital distribution. Its just a waste.

In Australia, ALL broadband services have capped plans. But you never usually pay extra for exceeding the cap - rather your speed just gets cut down to slow speed (some providers allow you to then pay top-up costs).

I'm paying $120/m (AU) for a 40gig service. If I was in a ADSL 2+ area, this would drop to around $80AU for 50-60gig.

Its still enough for an easy 15-30 movies per month (or one movie per day, every day) - much more than my household would ever watch.

...

For the average person, the Time Warner cap just isn't an issue. I think its perfectly reasonable to charge people who 'abuse' the service additional fees - especially on a unlimited connection.

Also remember that connection speeds, bandwidth usage & cost are all significantly improving - and at a rapid rate. Within 3-5 years, people won't even notice the bandwidth usage of movie watching.

More BS stats they pull out their asses just so they can charge you as much as possible. Yet, so many people still fall for their shit and eat it, too.

Eat up and sooner or later, you'll only use your highspeed internet to send and receive emails from your grandma.

See, this is one of the reasons that I get in the car and hop over to Blockbuster when I want to rent a movie.

But about the question of why BR/HDDVD are necessary, I believe that a 2-hour SD only takes about 1-2 gb. On a DVD, this means they have 7 gb left for extra content. For an HD movie using 4-5 gb, there isn't much room for extra content on a DVD, necessitating more storage.

Spiderman 3 in 1080p with five 5.1 lossless audio tracks takes up 43 GB.

I was going to point out how wildly inaccurate that statement was, but you beat me to it.

It's all about the bitrate. Superbit DVD's tend to use about 8gb for a film whatever the length. A HD movie needs about 4x as much space as an SD movie to maintain the same image quality (at a higher res obviously). Therefore, a 2 hour movie in HD could use as little as 4-5gb, but the image quality would be terrible.

EDIT: That would be assuming they used the same codecs, which is admittedly unlikely as HD formats support more (and better) codecs. It's all theoretical, but 4-5gb would look shit even in VC-1 or H.264.

i like the line about the time warner exec wanting customers to feel like they are getting a good value. what a load of crap. they are notorius for jacking up prices on their services. once they get you to sign up, the jacking is non stop i wonder if there are any high speed alternatives in the san antonio area?

Bingo.

That's why there is a lot of confusion when it comes to HD. I've noticed with TWC/air there is a huge diffferent in HD between stations. (as far as local stations here CBS seems to look the best) Some HD is compressed so much it doesn't look much better than SD ( artifacts really shows up in people faces). So not all "HD" is the same as so far there is no set standard of what can be called HD.

By far the best HD I've seen is from my PS3 Blu-ray.

Bell (Canadian Telephone/Internet provide) is retarded..

If you sign up for a 2 year contract you pay 19.99 for 3 months and then 49.99/month. If you sign up with NO contract you pay 19.99 for 3 months and then 49.99/month...

yeah!!

European mentality is very different from NA mentality..

We (in the NA) usually take it up the butt and don't say jack. In Europe things are way different...

People will protest (and I mean protest and not a crappy silent march) for the slightest injustice. Universities can organize massive student protest in days, those students organization have connection with labour unions and then they join and suddenly you have a whole country on strike because the government decided not to tax McDonalds drive thru with the same taxes as smaller shops..

Ok so maybe the only thing that happened with the McDonalds incident is the farmers dumping tonnes of manure in McD's parking lots...

I can tell you exactly what will happen.. The other Big NA ISP will see this and copy it. Companies learned that when they compete we win.. and if we win then they lose. So they're not competiting anymore, they just copy each others rates and jack up the price whenever one of their competitors raises their cost.

This is why digitial distribution will not become the standard for many years to come.
The digitial infrastructure is not in place in the US.
