I put this on the gaming forum because I will mainly use it for gaming, but if a mod thinks it belongs elsewhere you can move it.

Today I got a Sony 5.1 home theatre system worth $400 for free (yes, omfg free). Now I'm planning on getting a projector, so please recommend me which to get!

Take this into account:

-I don't want to spend over $1200, including the screen.

-The distance between walls is 3m (10 feet).

-I want the best possible quality within the $1200 budget.

-I might consider going over the 1200 figure, but it really must be worth it.

I heard wonderful things about the Optoma HD20's quality/price value, so I was thinking of getting that one, but the info is a bit old so there may be better things out there. I have no idea about screens so any input will be appreciated.

Any recommendations?

If that "theatre system" is just surround sound speakers and a blu-ray player than why not just get a really good tv? Especially if you're only sitting 3m away from it.

It's just the speakers actually but I have a PS3.

And the reason I want a projector is because I can get 80" worth of screen with similar quality for much cheaper, really.

hmm... an 80" would kill my eyes from 3m away! xD

Just curious how does projector screen quality compare to tv screens?

Extremely good image quality in the dark, depends on the projector if there is light.

I am also planning on getting a projector.
I did some research about 1080p 3D projectors and the best value for its money seems to give projectors from Epson.

What i am missing on them is lens shift, but i guess that's a feature you just won't get in this price class (i am planning to spend 1000€ (roundabout 1300$) for the projector.

I currently have an acer hd580 i think. The thing with projectors is that they don't get good black unless you are in a dark room. I like mine but wish i would of spent more to get one that was brighter so it would work better in low light condition. Try and message disolute (i think thats his username) he has a lot of experience with projectors.

Yeah, I'm gonna install shutters in the room and possibly get a non-white screen (apparently it's easier to get a perfect white on a gray screen than a perfect black on a white one).
