Though, I think you missed some of the subtext of the joke.

Which is... That the game is Counter Strike GO.

Counter Strike being a Valve property... and also, in retrospect it was valve who announced it in the first place.

Knowing valve, this probably all their idea.

No doubt a thought experiment by them to see how many people who didn't buy it at launch, do so after the 60 minute trial.  Using the PS3 users who don't have PS+ as a control.  (This is likely the case even if it was sony's idea.  Seems Valvian alright though.)

Not completely scientiifc since they aren't randomly selected, but still about as good as you can get and treating your clients equally.
