Forums - Sales - Sony: 2.2 Million PS Vita Units Sold Worldwide

I just can't see the 3DS getting a big boost from Pokemon. Sure, there was a decent (18%) boost in Japan, but the most notable hardware boost was for the DS (67%). And the 3DS boost was gone after a week and a half. Meanwhile, the DS is still doing decently in America. If anything, I expect the DS to get a boost as parents buy cheap Pokemon bundles for their kids.

When I look at the 3DS's lineup for this holiday season, the only two big sellers I see are Paper Mario and Professor Layton. Those are the only two definite million sellers I can see. Other games like Scribblenauts Unlimited, Epic Mickey, Freakyforms Deluxe, Skylanders, Adventure Time, Rabbids Rumble, Lego LOTR, Angry Birds, and Sonic Racing offer plenty of variety, but I doubt most of them will be great sellers or huge critical hits.

And then you have a DS game, of all things, hogging the spotlight away from the 3DS. I dunno, it's just as if Nintendo released New Super Mario Bros on the GBA instead of the DS. Sure, they would have gotten a lot of sales, but at the expense of selling new hardware.

1, Black 2 & White 2 launched in Japan the week the XL was announced. You can bet that 3DS hardware would have received a larger and longer-lasting boost from those releases if that hadn't been the case, and I'll bet it DOES get a larger boost when they're released in the West.

2, the word "cheap" should never be used in any conversation about main series Pokémon games. Dang prices never drop. :P

3, last year's 3D Land and Kart 7 will easily sell another million units this Holiday, and New Super 2 is going to be the #1 gift around the world. Does it matter that they'll have been released well before November if they're the best-selling games that month and the next, anyway? Layton games don't have particularly strong openings, but their legs have never failed to sell 2 million in the long run. And no, "most" of the games you named will not be great sellers or huge critical hits, but some of them might. Epic Mickey for Wii sold over 2.5 mil, and I see no reason the 3DS game couldn't be a million-seller, especially now that it's an established brand. Skylanders could sell an easy 500k, not too shabby. Both DS Scribblenauts games sold over a million, I don't expect this one to be much different. All together, 3DS will move a LOT of software this Holiday.

4, people keep hating on B2/W2 being DS games. DS launched in 2004. Emerald came out in 2005. The West didn't get the first DS Pokémon games until 2007. This is just GameFreak continuing to do their thing.

Nintendos strategy is to release less appealing games on holidays to boost their performance, and then when holiday madness ends release the big hitters to boost the slowing down hw sales
