Forums - Microsoft - Kinect 2 image leaked, shows increased detail and depth data

The Verge

Microsoft's next-generation "Xbox 720" console has seen a variety of leaks recently, including speculation over its planned launch date, but we've yet to see solid details on Kinect 2. That may have changed this week after a Twitter user posted what is claimed to be a sample from Kinect 2 running on a Durango (new Xbox codename) development kit. The image shows two users interacting with Kinect and what appears to be an increased amount of depth and movement data.

It's hard to tell whether the image is real, but one of our own sources says this is a genuine test sample. Microsoft is working with the Durango Xbox Development Kit (XDK) and the user interface is the same as shown in the picture, according to one person familiar with Microsoft's Durango work. Microsoft's testing involves a focus on depth and movement data, something shown in the picture. Although Kinect 2 might be shaping up to be an incremental improvement over the existing hardware, Microsoft's leaked Xbox 720 document promised higher accuracy, stereo imaging, improved voice recognition, and support for four-player tracking. Kinect 2 will also support accessories that interact with the sensor for games such as darts and baseball.

Regardless of how accurate the technology becomes, it still won't be a good way to control games. But I guess Dance Central 4 will be good on it.

Might be the case ...

According to what I have read online, Kinect only captured images at half the sensors potential resolution because of the limited bandwith of the USB interface. With USB 3.0, more processing power, and the lower cost of sensors, Microsoft could potentially increase the resolution of Kinect substantially.

With that said, if I was Microsoft I wouldn't put too much emphasis on Kinect. Kinect did well at taking away some of the Wii's momentium and selling the XBox 360 to a different demographic but it has really had fairly mediocre reviews from owners and I suspect people will be much more gun-shy about buying into a system that focuses heavily on that.

Kinect 2 sure is coming, but this picture looks fake

Its good for party games and dashboard navigation. But the trick is making hybrid games like Steel Batallion but actually making them good.

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

I think it looks fake, too. Even my current Kinect does a great job of spotting me and keeping the skeleton of me separate from my background. In that pic, the persons feet seem to blend in with the floor/background. Happy action theater not only saw where I was, it saw where my walls were, my table was, and where the floor was.

Question will be then... How would you feel if it comes in every package of the NextBox? That you have to pay for it, even if you don't want it. (As that is the strong rumor circulating)

i'm sick of this anti-kinect shit, even kinect doing nothing they still can find a reason to show how he hate it and click every kinect thread to repeat samething 1000+ times

I won't mind.  If Microsoft makes that the focus of the new system then, so be it.  I didn't get pissed when I payed for Wi-Fi or Blu Ray when I got a PS3.  That's how Sony designed the hardware.  I didn't mind having motion control forced on me when I got a Wii.  That's what Nintendo decided to build the system around.  I'll buy my Wii U whether I want a tablet controller or not.  It's what Nintendo decided will be the standard hardware.  If Kinect 2.0 is a built in feature of the new Xbox, I can take it or leave it.  I guess I'll take it.

I'll probably just sell my current Kinect.

Sony never catches much flak for overpromising and underdelivering.  Toy Story graphics on PS2....really?  PS3 with 2 hdmi ports etc.  Xbox owners got on board with 360 after the Xbox was killed quickly and prematurely not the mention the RRoD thing.  I don't think and underdelivering on thier motion controller will hinder that much.

Increased resolution is exactly what would make the kinect a worthwhile experience for more than workout and dance games.  It would allow for very quick simple natural gestures with just your hand.  In short it would create the possiblity of more arcade like gameplay which is what the wii has and kinect doesn't.  In addition it will also make general computing, menu navigation and media consumption easier and more intuitive as well.  Doing it wrong was obviously profitable for them. I can't see how doing it right would be anything less.
