"Elect" and "monarch" don't go together. Look up the meaning of the word "monarchy". And for the record, quite a few countries do not have a singular head of state with most of the power. |
Monarchy means government of one. I can see his reasoning, and he's right to some extent. It's basically what Hobbes did point out, you can call one a president, prime minister, reichsführer, leader of the people's revolution, it's in essence the same thing, a monarch. True democracy was only possible on some greek city states due to their small size and limited definition of citizen. As states grew in complexity, their sheer number of people made direct democracy impractical.
I think disillusionment with the Electoral College system and increased corruption in the United States government contributed is leading to a growing desire to seek a trully democratic solution. Maybe with widespread internet access and quantum encrytption a nearly politician-less system could be conveyed where one vote per citizen trully has a meaning and people finally have control of their political and economic destinies.
Who knows, maybe I'm being optmistic but I expect people a century from now to look behind and see the UK, US, EU etc. governments as something as outdated as the Austro-Hungarian and Russian Empires look nowadays.
